Carpenter

Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to serve as a carpenter for construction projects performed by the Facilities Management Service section throughout the facility as assigned. Facilities include all buildings on the main campus - leased facilities - and off-site facilities throughout the VA Sierra Nevada's coverage area.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Duties

• Major duties include - but are not limited to: Repairs or replaces doors - sash - screens - etc. - by replacing worn or damaged pieces and planning off irregular or warped surfaces
• Constructs - moves - or changes partitions - installing necessary bracing to support the structure
• Measures - cuts - and nails plywood - Masonite - plasterboard - etc. - to erected studs
• Installs and repairs asphalt tile - linoleum floor coverings and acoustical ceiling tile - Formica coverings - plastic tile wall
• Cuts and patches holes in partitions - floors - and ceilings for station plumbers - electricians - etc. - when carpentry work is required
• Constructs - assembles - maintains - and repairs fire and smoke partitions and/or barriers in accordance with regulatory agencies and established policies and procedures
• Operates and uses a number of power tools and equipment - including power saws - drills - sanders - etc
• When working in the Carpenter Shop - the incumbent operates table saws - mechanical planes - hand saws - jointers - etc
• Installs door locks - such as mortise locks - night locks - and all kinds of catches and fixtures
• Also - in emergencies - will open locked doors - window frames - etc
• Repairs and installs blinds - window shading - window shades and drapery and curtain accessories
• Installs interior trim - such as baseboard - base mold - wainscoting - picture molding - cornices - etc
• This requires the skillful use of hammers - saws - chisels - squares - miter boxes - nail sets - etc
• Constructs - installs - maintains - and repairs concrete and stucco type products on all surface levels interior and exterior
• Repairs to roofs (all types) - gutters and downspouts
• Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30 Am to 4:00 PM Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD03058A Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to work at job sites and wood shops which can require them to stand for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions while operating machinery
• The incumbent at time may spend a considerable amount of time bending - kneeling and stopping
• The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping - bending - kneeling - climbing - and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions
• The incumbent works from ladders - scaffolding and hydraulic platforms
• He/she often works in portions of the utility systems that are cramped - dirty and hard-to-reach locations
• The incumbent may lift and carry tools - equipment - ladders - scaffolding - parts and supplies up to 40 pounds
• Occasionally - the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 40 pounds.
