What are the responsibilities and job description for the CLINICAL LAB ANIMAL VETERINARIAN position at UAB Health System?

To provide clinical and surgical medical care of animals (multi-species) used in research and training. To support health surveillance and preventative medicine programs, and to participate in teaching and training of departmental personnel and research staff. To review animal use requests for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Animal Welfare regulations. To supervise veterinary staff members and provide emergency veterinary care. To participate in all activities that are part of a dynamic laboratory animal care and use program including research, grant writing, equipment and process evaluation, tours and the development of standard operating procedures.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Provides clinical and surgical medical care to research animals.

Obtains and evaluates history of veterinary medical and surgical cases.

Performs physical assessments and develops diagnostic sampling and therapeutic management proposal of cases.

Establishes management protocol and initiates treatment.

Provides on-call weekend and emergency care.

Supervises animal health technician(s), monitors schedule and assures coverage of responsibilities.

Recommends hiring, terminating and promoting employees and conducts performance evaluation.

Performs or assists in health assessment and reviews pertinent test results on proposed animal shipments to and from the UAB campus.

Discusses colony/herd history or individual health of animals with veterinary and husbandry staff, research personnel or representatives from the facility supplying animals and approves receipt of qualified animals.

Supervises or assists in the quarantine of animals of unknown health status and authorizes release from quarantine when appropriate assurances have been confirmed.

May provide health assessment for animals prior to intrastate and international shipment.

Communicates information to facilitate shipment and oversee shipment and transportation arrangements.

Maintains appropriate records and assists in report preparation.

Reviews animal health records for completion as required by regulations.

Assists in the preparation of required regulatory reports. Serves as primary or alternate member of the IACUC.

Reviews animal use requests and consults with faculty and research staff on topics related to animal research.

Assures compliance of all animal use requests with accepted veterinary practices and regulatory requirements of the USDA and other applicable regulatory agencies and institutional policies.

Prepares and presents lectures, seminars and workshops on a variety of animal care and use topics for UAB staff, students and community organizations.

Manages ARP and IACUC veterinary medical and surgical programs to assure the health, well-being and humane care of research animals.

Participates in the development and writing of grants, program description and scientific publications. Interacts with regulatory agents and other guests as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range: $94,375.00 - $153,355.00 (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and two (2) years of related experience required OR Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and completion of a related training program required Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently credentialed as an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Diplomate by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or similar board veterinary specialty (i.e. American College of Veterinary Surgeons or American College Veterinary Pathologist) required. State of Alabama Veterinary License must be obtained within two (2) years from hire date.
