The Principal Energy Systems Engineer will report into the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis - Power Systems and Markets Research Group. Lead and support technical, economic, and environmental analyses of energy and power systems. Develop and apply methodologies and tools for techno-economic analyses of energy technologies and systems, including conventional and renewable electricity generating technologies and distributed energy resources, including energy storage systems. Evaluate the impact of various policies and investments on grid emissions, costs, and power system stability. Tools include computer modeling and simulations, databases, analysis algorithms, computational methodologies, economic and financial models. Analyses include power system operation and expansion, engineering economics and finance, life cycle analysis, optimization, and equilibrium analysis. Provide technical direction, leadership, coordination, and support in developing and applying computational analysis tools to study complex energy and environmental systems issues of national, local, and international significance. Work will involve leading or participating as a member of multidisciplinary teams to develop analytical methods and tools that can be applied to the issues of interest to power systems and overall energy systems, apply these methods and tools to create analysis results designed to provide useful information to decision-makers, and transfer these methods and tools to other researchers. Serve as principal investigator or team member to support a portfolio of research, development, and demonstration projects focusing on the analysis of power and energy systems, and related economic and environmental issues. Communicate research results and generate new ideas that advance the science and research of energy and environmental systems. Position Requirements Demonstrated experience and ability to plan, manage, and implement research and development projects in energy and power systems, including the operations and planning analyses in conditions of regulated and restructured energy markets. Knowledge and experience in analysis of electricity markets, integration of variable renewables and energy storage into the grid, production cost and capacity expansion planning, interactions, and interdependencies between the electric and other sectors of the economy, and other issues. Knowledge in the development of algorithms, methodologies, and tools to simulate the behavior of physical, organizational, and/or individual decision-making systems, particularly related to energy finance, policy, and infrastructure planning. Knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering as applied to complex systems. Experience with computer simulation techniques including MATLAB, C/C , Python and CPLEX. Demonstrated capabilities to lead or work with multidisciplinary teams, including collaboration with industry and other national laboratories. Significant skills and demonstrated experience in interacting with DOE and other potential sponsors. Capabilities to adapt to complex, dynamic, and rapidly changing requirements of research sponsors. Demonstrated capabilities in developing and managing research programs for sponsored work, following Argonne, DOE, and/or other federal agency policies and procedures. Skilled written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills at all levels of the organization. Master’s and 20 years, or Doctorate and 15 years.
