What are the responsibilities and job description for the Speech Pathologist - Craniofacial position at uic?
UI Health is seeking a Speech Pathologist to join our Craniofacial Clinic team. This role will evaluate impact of dentition/occlusion and palate on speech sound articulation and provide treatment as needed; use specialized equipment (such as the nasometer and nasoendoscopy) to fully assess and treat speech resonance disorders. Collaborate and refer patients to other team members (plastic surgeons, prothodontists, orthodontist, etc) for other interventions needed to improve speech patterns.
Serve as the specialist in evaluating and treating conditions related to communication with additional specialized training in voice and swallowing disorders; help individuals prevent or overcome communication problems such as articulation, impaired language, stuttering, slurring or lisps. Work with people with swallowing disorders, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities, stroke and other traumas.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Meet with clients to assess current speech problems through various tests and speech exercises. Evaluate and monitor patient's speech articulation and resonance. Observe and train parents of children with cleft palates on proper feeding methods; observe and teach post oncology treatment patients on various methods to improve speech/ swallowing related issues.
- Provide treatment to reduce use of compensatory errors, and improve speech intelligibility. Develop treatment plans based on testing and other medical professionals that work with patient. Teach patient to improve speech through specific exercises or use of specialized equipment or alternative communication methods such as sign language or computers.
- Collaborate and communicate with other team member health professionals such as physicians, audiologists, social workers, teachers, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Attend treatment team meetings to ensure that all aspects of patient health and progress are managed
- Prepare comprehensive speech evaluation reports; contact outside speech therapy services to ensure goals and services are met
- Create home programs; provide extensive parent education and training
- Maintain records, notes and charts regarding patient treatments; prepare written diagnostic reports and IEP's.
- Refer patients to other professionals in and outside medical center (e.g. child study team, ENT doctor, family physician, audiologist.
- Attend trainings and professional development activities to stay current with treatment options.
- Visit classrooms and community centers to assist in assessment, lessons on listening, speaking, voice projection, and mentor students.
