The Office of University Development’s primary purpose is to build philanthropic relationships that engage alumni, donors, students, faculty, and the community in supporting the University’s mission. These efforts include working closely with donors, governing boards, alumni, friends, community members, foundations, and corporations to increase private giving to the University. The Office of University Development is within the division of University Advancement.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Senior Director of Special Projects and Campaigns, the Assistant Director of Special Projects leads, manages, creates, and implements fundraising initiatives that enhance and support fundraising efforts and campaign priorities.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Special Projects will handle a broad and diverse range of responsibilities and assignments to support key special projects, develop fundraising strategies and tactics for a variety of initiatives, and partner with all areas of Advancement.
Working in a collaborative team environment, the Assistant Director regularly meets with gift officers and University Advancement colleagues on project development and management to produce deliverables in support of fundraising goals. In addition, the Assistant Director maintains comprehensive knowledge of the University’s priorities and programs to actively align those with potential donors.
The Assistant Director will interact at a high level with University leadership and volunteers and must embrace the opportunity to work as a collaborative partner with a variety of colleagues involved in advancing the University.

Minimum Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum of three years or greater of related professional experience in fundraising, sales, or project management
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for a diverse nature of projects and to complete them on time with limited supervision
- Experience working with graphic designers
- Goal-oriented self-starter with high attention to detail
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethics of fundraising
- Ability to build effective internal and external relationships
- Excellent verbal communication skills and outstanding writing ability
- Commitment to a collegial and collaborative team approach
- Ability to work both independently and as part of multiple teams
- Optimism, perseverance, and a positive attitude
- Computer literacy and competency with electronic donor information systems, Adobe Creative Cloud products, Microsoft and Google suite of software products, project management software, and donor databases
- Experience in higher education institutional advancement
- Capacity to be proactive, by anticipating needs and looking ahead
