8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours required, as necessary.
Primary Purpose of Position
The individual will function as a small business case management of around 50 cases annually. Significant amount of independent analysis and interpretation of data is required. Incumbent will conduct autonomous decision making based on analysis of each client’s operating and financial situations and fiscal management policies. Incumbent will maintain and reconcile the center’s non personal budget. This person will be responsible for handling all client intake including: deciding the best assistance options for each client (training, group counseling, individual counseling), answering client questions, developing financial spreadsheets and completing research projects. The SBTDC client base incorporates businesses as diverse as a contemplated part time janitorial start up and a manufacturer with 50 employees and revenues of $10 million per year. The person who fills this position must be able to effectively communicate with this wide variety of individuals. Consequently, the Assistant Counselor also would be expected to be very knowledgeable about business start up issues and general business issues and resources. Business counseling will be primarily with startups and some existing businesses. Person will also deliver business seminars to the general public on behalf of the university. Person will establish and maintain relationships with community and university partners.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Graduation from a four year college or university and one year of program associate experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties
- The Business Counselor will function as a small business counselor.
- Serving start-up and some existing companies.
- Support the director.
- Responsible for the daily fiscal management of the Center’s multiple budgets.
- Responsible for developing financial spreadsheets and completing short-term research projects for selected clients.
- Will deliver business related seminars and oversee the center’s client tracking system.
Other Work Responsibilities
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and one year of experience in consulting.
- Preferred candidate will have business ownership experience, including start-up issues and general business issues.
- Working knowledge of financial statements.
- Experience in analytical skills.
- Experience in client advisory skills.
- Strong administrative skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite to include Word, Excel, and Google Suite, Gmail.
- Must be detailed oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills.
