What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Teachers position at United Children and Family Head Start?

Assists the Teacher with classroom operation including, planning, carrying out activities, and maintaining a classroom environment that is nurturing, consistent, supportive and developmentally appropriate; individualizes learning experiences for children and fully involves parents in the program. Supervises children and classroom volunteers; together with the Teacher, makes home visits, and conducts parent-teacher conferences.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development

Experience :

One or more years of classroom experience in an Early Childhood environment

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be physically capable of meeting of performing duties of the classification
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in Standard English
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective Teaching Practices – ability to set learning goals and plans learning experiences by integrating knowledge of each child’s temperament, interests, genders, culture, language approaches, understanding, misconceptions, and abilities
  • Content Area Domain –ability to fosters teacher-child and child-child conversations intentionally by facilitating mutual sharing and authentic exchange of ideas, thoughts, and feelings
  • Learning Environments – ability to promotes children’s active exploration, creativity, and development in all domains by designing indoor and outdoor environments based on knowledge of how children develop and learn, and their individual abilities
  • Observation, Analysis, Planning, and Documentation - ability to meet federal, state, and program documentation requirements by ensuring the program maintains accurate objective, complete, timely, and well organized child, family, financial and program records.
  • Communication - ability to build an understanding of the program by communicating its philosophy, mission, and services to staff, families, and the community and by supporting staff to do the same
  • Professionalism/Leadership - ability to provide effective leadership by serving as a role model for families and other staff, communicating positively, understanding and accepting cultural differences, motivating and encouraging, and demonstrating skilled decision making.
  • Technical Skills – maintain current understanding of technical processes/equipment, use technology to increase performance/productivity; proficiency in work processing, spreadsheet, and computer research and computer mailbox
  • Teamwork – ability to work on a team, be accountable to the team, work to meet established deliverables, appreciate view of team members, and be respectful

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Travel by car, bus, airplane or train may also be required associated with attendance at conferences, meetings and other duties carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases where some overnight travel may be required
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 45 pounds
  • May occasionally need to lift and carry children or classroom equipment
  • Must be able to crouch, kneel, craw and sit on the floor to be at child’s level
  • Must be able to get up off the floor and sit back down easily
  • Must be able to sit on the floor for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to walk and run to observe children
  • Some exposure to communicable diseases
  • Noise in work environment may be moderate to loud
  • Work is generally performed in an classroom setting, involving face-to-face communications
  • Some events and weekend work may occasionally be required for events such as home visits, parent-teacher conferences, Parent Committee meetings, social and community events

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program Planning and Implementation

Under the general supervision of the Teacher:

  • Ensure compliance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards and Other Regulations
  • Implement program plans, policies and procedures for providing education and early childhood development services
  • Put into practice theories and sound principles of early childhood and adult education
  • Administer developmentally screenings and ongoing assessments of each child
  • Include parents in the process of ongoing assessment
  • Assist in arranging the classroom environment to accommodate a variety of children’s needs and strengths, and to stimulate learning across all domains of development: social, emotional, cognitive, and physical
  • Provide an environment of acceptance that supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity, and family composition
  • Participate in the development and implementation of lesson plans that are consistent with the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework and school readiness goals; supports each child’s individual pattern of development and learning; provides for the development of cognitive skills; integrates all educational aspects of the health, nutrition, and mental health services into program activities; helps children develop emotional security in social relationships; encourages children self-awareness; helps each child develop feelings of competence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes toward learning
  • Be inclusive of children with disabilities, implementing the child’s individual education plan (IEP)
  • Regularly and continually observe and record children’s behavior and progress in order to help in the design of activities that support individual developmental levels
  • Share observations and ongoing assessment information for incorporation into lesson plans
  • Assist in providing a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-directed activities including individual and small group activities, both indoors and outdoors
  • Assist in reviewing and analyzing data on child outcomes
  • Embrace the role of the parent as the primary educator of the child and promote attachment between parent and child
  • Involve parents in transition activities;
  • Together with the Teacher, conduct two (2) home visits and two (2) parent-teacher conferences for each child each program year; encourage parents participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits
  • Keep Teacher informed of child issues
  • Assist in maintaining child files utilizing computerized child tracking system
  • Maintain confidentiality of information
  • Assist with recruitment and enrollment of children
  • B* *. Community Relations/Public Affairs
  • Where appropriate, represent the organization to the external market, as well as internally through the application of community relations and marketing activities
  • Expand outreach efforts and referral networks to ensure effective partnerships are formed
  • Attend community group meetings and maintain contacts with colleges and universities, community partners, social service agencies, vendors, Head Start and Early Head Start parents, and the general public

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.95 - $21.12 per hour
