Position Summary:

The Fabricator/Welder is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and repairing dredging equipment and steel components used in field operations. This role supports both shop-based builds and on-site welding, ensuring equipment is safe, functional, and customized to meet job requirements. The ideal candidate has strong welding skills, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to work independently or as part of a crew.


Key Responsibilities:

Fabrication & Welding

  • Cut, fit, weld, and assemble structural components from blueprints or verbal instructions.
  • Perform MIG and stick welding on mild steel, plate, pipe, and tubing.
  • Fabricate parts and supports for dredges, barge frames, buckets, boom arms, and rigging systems.
  • Modify existing equipment and structures as needed based on field requirements.

Repair & Maintenance Welding

  • Identify cracks, wear, and structural damage in equipment and perform field or shop repairs.
  • Assist mechanics with repair projects involving welding, torching, and grinding.
  • Fabricate replacement parts or reinforcements for worn dredge components.

Shop & Field Support

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including welding stations and metal inventory.
  • Operate shop tools including band saws, torches, grinders, and forklifts.
  • Occasionally travel to job sites to perform on-location repairs or installations.

Safety & Quality

  • Follow all safety procedures, wear appropriate PPE, and ensure fire watch as needed.
  • Inspect welds and completed work to meet company standards and structural integrity.
  • Maintain welding equipment and notify supervisor of any tool issues or material shortages.

Qualifications:

  • 2–4 years of welding/fabrication experience in a construction or industrial setting.
  • Proficient in MIG and stick welding (TIG optional but a plus).
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and technical instructions.
  • Comfortable with heavy lifting, grinding, and working in varied shop and field conditions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience welding structural steel or custom equipment frames.
  • Background in dredging, mining, farming, or heavy equipment repair.
  • CDL or the ability to assist with field mobilization is a plus.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily shop-based with periodic travel to job sites (some overnights possible).
  • Requires lifting up to 75 lbs, bending, standing for long periods, and working around noise and dust.
  • Collaborative, hands-on environment with opportunities to build and improve real-world equipment.
