Schedule

4 days/week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

2 routes/day: 6:45 - 8:10 and 10:40 - 12:10

General Purpose

The Rainbow Route Bus Aide position is a seasonal position that revolves around the academic school year. Meaning that, United Way of Mower County does not guarantee a Rainbow Route Bus Aide, herein referred to as “Aide”, a guaranteed number of hours nor holds the obligation to provide an Aide hours during school and/or summer breaks.

The Aide assists in the safe and pleasant transportation of children enrolled in the Rainbow Route, under the direct supervision of United Way of Mower County and SMART Transit, and is responsible for communication with the agency supervisor(s) and Department(s) of Human Services, when required, and will be expected to follow all Rainbow Route policies and procedures. Flexible hours will be required during weekdays.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from the home/ preschools, including but not limited to:

  • Act immediately to remove all dangers or threats to the welfare of children. Use good judgment and clear communication when a safety intervention is required. Inform all appropriate parties in a timely manner
  • Helping children board the bus safely
  • Assure that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle
  • Help children safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them
  • Retrieve any fallen objects while on the bus
  • Follows and ensures mandated child restraint device procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained
  • Engages in an activity that is safe and appropriate for a moving vehicle and consistent with appropriate developmental stages to make the trip pleasant and comfortable
  • Assists in completing incident reports.
  • Reports any traffic violations incurred by the Bus Driver to SMART Transit supervisor.
  • Assures that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus.
  • Attend all trainings and staff meetings.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator

Required Qualifications

  • Must act in a non-discriminatory manner towards all clients, regardless of age, sex, race, national origin, religion, physical handicap, social or economic status, affectional preference or choice of lifestyle
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of basic child care
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be dependable when scheduled to work and must honor that commitment
  • Must have good judgment, maturity, common sense, and a high degree of responsibility
  • Must be able to maintain an independent role and draw boundaries
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be willing to attend trainings as directed
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Bilingual skills will be an advantage

Working Conditions

Risk of exposure to blood, bloody fluids, or tissues. Risk involved with travel during the transportation of children. Risk of exposure to communicable diseases. Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, climb into the bus, kneel, bend over and squat frequently.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $13.00 per hour

Expected hours: 12 – 15 per week
