MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPANDED LEARNING TUTOR
Position Summary:
Oakland Unity Middle School is seeking experienced, enthusiastic and creative individuals to lead youth-development focused activities for 6th through 8th graders. The ideal candidate has experience teaching after-school classes to middle school youth and a background in physical education, arts, cooking, STEM, media, theater, dance or any other unique enrichment. This position reports directly to the Afterschool Program Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Attend Fall Training, bi-weekly staff meetings, and a minimum of two training sessions per month
- Provide instruction in a specific enrichment such as Art, Media, Cooking, Homework support, etc.
- Offer structured activities to middle school youth Monday through Friday afternoons during the school year
- Work with After School Coordinator to plan a project-oriented curriculum to support youth’s social-emotional, academic, and physical success by incorporating the five supports and opportunities of Youth Development Theory and Practice: safety, youth participation, skill building, community involvement, and relationship building
- Work with After School Coordinator on developing and leading a comprehensive curriculum that embeds high-quality skill-building through activities that are sequenced, active, focused, explicit
- Plan regular, creative, literacy-based activities that allow youth to build listening and speaking skills
- Prepare and organize teaching materials, including long-term, unit, and daily lesson plans
- Maintain close contact with families regarding youth progress, attendance, and program information
- Establish and maintain a safe and welcoming environment for youth
- Perform administrative tasks, including keeping attendance binders clean and updating Program Coordinator on inventory list
- Set and model expectations for youth in keeping with the goals of Oakland Unity Middle School and the program
- Connect youth to other resources as needed
- Advise the Program Coordinator of the status of activities, challenges, and successes through regular communication
- Maintain a professional attitude and work ethic
- Comply with Oakland Unity Middle School policies and procedures and laws pertaining to the operation of Oakland Unity Middle School and the safety of participants
Ability to:
- Work and communicate effectively with adults and middle school students from diverse backgrounds
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff
- Monitor and motivate students in the school setting: classrooms, courtyard, cafeteria
- Assist with necessary parent meetings and community events if/when needed
- Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- Respond to electronic communication (email) in a timely manner
- Read and write English with sufficient comprehension to perform duties accurately and competently.
- If/when needed, provide translation for student-led conferences or phone calls (if fluent in Spanish)
Expectations:
- Promptness: It is imperative that ASP tutors and supervisors arrive to work and to assigned duties on time. We are a small and mighty team that needs every team member present when expected.
- Sign in upon arrival to the school site.
- Sign out upon exiting the school site.
- Restricting cell phone usage during work time to work-related communication
- Professional conduct and language
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- In process of obtaining additional degree (AA, BA, BS or other professional certification)
- Passion for Oakland Unity Middle School’s mission and commitment to providing young people with the highest-quality youth development experience.
- Experience working with multi-ethnic, multi-cultural youth ages 11-14.
- Experience working in recreation programs.
- Experience teaching in a non-classroom setting, preferably in the area of health and nutrition.
- Strong understanding of the theory and practice of youth development.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
- Fingerprint and tuberculosis (TB) test clearance upon hire.
Supervisors:
- Reports directly to Afterschool Program Coordinator
- Reports ultimately to the Co-Principals
Hours:
- M, Tu, Th, Fri: 2:30-6:00, W: 8:45-4:45 = 22 hours per week
- Start date: August 5th
