What are the responsibilities and job description for the Control Desk Specialist-Surgical Services position at UnityPoint Health?
The Operating Room Control Desk Specialist will assist the nursing and medical staff with day-to-day operations of the Operating Room. He/she will participate in marketing the Operating Room through efficiency in communication. The Operating Room Control Desk Specialist will work closely with the OR Leadership team, Surgical Services departments, nursing staff, surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure high quality communication and scheduling of surgical procedures. They are in a key position to market the surgical program through direct interactions with the medical staff and their office personnel.

Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Establishes and maintains productive, professional relationships with key personnel
- Proactively assesses, clarifies, and validates customer needs on an ongoing basis. Clearly relays the information to customers.
- Develops and maintains a positive working environment, supporting open communication and respect for all members of the internal and external health care team.
- Directs nursing and medical staff concerns to the appropriate Supervisor.
- Obtains accurate information from medical staff for the addition of urgent/emergent cases to the surgery schedule and informs OR Supervisor/charge nurse immediately.
- Schedules procedures accurately using the Surgical Services IT system, creating the correct surgeon preference card.
Departmental Support
- Facilitates accurate and complete data entry for Surgical Services for various projects as indicated by the OR Leadership team.
- Establishes and maintains accurate files and continually updates information.
- Maintains timekeeping/payroll
Basic UPH Performance Criteria

- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications
Education: Associates degree in related field or direct and applicable work experience
Experience: 1 year experince in the Operating Room (preferred)
License(s)/Certification(s):Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
Must possess current basic life support (BLS) certification or obtain within 3 months of hire
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English
Strong customer service orientation/mindset
Knowledge of medical terminology/anatomy and Surgical Procedures
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, multiple phone lines, and data entry
