Job Summary : The Radiation Safety Technician assists with the daily operations related to radiation safety issues routinely and as needed on campus. Ensures proper implementation of the radiation safety program in University research laboratories under the supervision of the University's Radiation Safety Administrator. Ensures University compliance with federal and state mandated regulatory compliance for radiation use.

Additional Department Summary : The Radiation Safety Technician, under the guidance of the Radiation Safety Administrator / Officer, performs duties related to radiation safety and lab safety issues routinely and as needed on campus. Assists the Radiation Safety Administrator / Officer in ensuring proper implementation of the radiation safety program in University research laboratories. Assists the Radiation Safety Administrator / Officer in ensuring University compliance with federal and state mandated regulatory compliance for radiation use. Maintains confidentiality in all work performed.

The Radiation Safety Technician may be required to respond to emergency situations after hours and therefore, must maintain communication accessibility 24 / 7.

Required Minimum Qualifications : High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of radiation safety experience; OR associate's degree and two (2) years of radiation safety program experience; OR bachelor's degree or higher and some radiation safety program experience. Certified Radiation Safety Officer or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire date.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications : Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge : Strong administrative, organizational, and analytical skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and enthusiastic work ethic. Ability to exercise discretion, make informed decisions, and handle emergency situations. Ability to work in confined hazardous environments wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus is required. Ability to educate others in safe work practices and facilitate laboratory training(s). Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with a full range of personnel that reflect a strong commitment to customer service and collegiality. Ability to operate computer software such as databases and word processing. Working knowledge of current local, state, and federal regulations related to academic radiation and lab safety programs. Experience using survey meters and counting equipment. Understanding of the current compliance requirements applicable to research activities and facilities. Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet / database, and presentation software.

Preferred Qualifications : Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of comprehensive radiation safety program experience. Completed Radiation Safety Officer Training. Experience working in laboratory safety within a university setting. Managerial, supervisory, or project management experience. Knowledge of standard operational health physics theories, principles, and practices. Understanding of scientific practices and procedures. Knowledge of laboratory and / or radiation safety principles and practices.
