Position overview Position title: Kim Lab: Research Specialist (Jr Spec - Specialist Ranks)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series The posted). UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series. "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 - $90,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications. Degree requirement must be met by June 18, 2024 for employment beginning on June 19, 2024 and beyond.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a research specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Euiseok Kim, the research specialist will conduct research on a fully funded project developing next-generation viral genetic neural circuit tracers. Duties will include cell culture assays, BSL-2 engineered virus production, molecular biology (cloning and PCR), fluorescent microscopy. The research specialist will also contribute to research projects by collecting and analyzing the resulting data, maintain basic lab reagents for molecular biology and histology, contribute to manuscripts, disseminate information through presentations, and assist with grant proposals.

This position will require the candidate to prioritize accuracy, successfully collaborate with other lab members, and employ excellent problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.S./B.A. degree or higher (or an equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience, molecular, cell, and developmental biology, biochemistry, virology, or a related discipline. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by June 18, 2024. See section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.300 Specialist Series policy for details of the degree requirements for each rank.
  • Research experience in molecular and cell biology/neuroscience, virology, or related biomedical fields.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in cell culture and/or virus production.
