UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services is excited to announce an opening on our clinical team. Are you a Physician who is passionate about working with a diverse student community? Would you like to make a positive difference in a college student's experience? We are seeking a Physician to work either 4 or 5 days a week (80%-100% time). The position also offers the possibility of a 4 or 8 week summer furlough. Positions with summer work breaks contain regularly scheduled periods during which the Physician remains an employee, retains health benefits, but is not at work. Work schedule preferences can be discussed at interview.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services. The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited high complexity clinical laboratory and campus pharmacy. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports UCSC students to maintain or improve their general well-being by providing a broad range of counseling, psychiatric services, consultation and outreach services and programs. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs. Student Health Services employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. Student Health Services welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Medical Director, the Physician evaluates and treats UCSC students in the Cowell Student Health Center on-site and via telehealth appointments. Clinical care involves same-day care for acute illness or injury and scheduled appointments for health screening, follow-up visits, and care for new and chronic conditions.

Healthcare at UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services stresses a developmental and educational focus, with a goal of engaging students in their health and wellness goals.

UC Santa Cruz Physicians must have the ability to see 16-20 patients per day, to provide excellent medical care, and to attend to relevant psychosocial and developmental needs of university students.

Salary Information: $17,507.75 / Monthly, proportionate to time worked (effective 7/1/22 salary will increase to $18,208)

JOB DUTIES

85% - Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment
  • Takes medical histories, performs examinations, orders diagnostic tests, and does clinical procedures in accordance with the standard of care at UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services and in the community
  • When appropriate, consults with or refers to other staff physicians or outside specialists
  • Makes entries documenting clinical care in the patient's medical record according to standard practice and the policies and procedures of UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services

10% - Collaboration
  • Works closely with other members of the clinical staff; physicians, nurses, technologists, pharmacists and ancillary personnel to provide clinical care in the most efficient manner
  • Participates in Quality Management and other staff committees and activities directed at monitoring and improving clinical care at UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services
  • As a member of the health care team, promotes smooth functioning of services by assisting where help is needed which may include occasional nights or weekends
  • Contributes to special projects and outreach efforts

5% - Supervision and Teaching
  • Supervises the clinical activities of mid-level practitioners in the clinical setting, cosigning charts and providing feedback and teaching on clinical issues
  • Participates in clinical conferences and case presentations


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of primary care physician duties in a busy clinical setting
  • Effective diagnostic and decision-making skills in handling more difficult cases
  • Advanced urgent care skills and competence in performing minor outpatient surgical procedures and managing urgent medical problems
  • Excellent written communication skills: Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing with patients, colleagues, and staff members
  • Excellent oral communication skills; excellent listening skills; ability to receive and give clear and concise information and communicate clearly and effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff members
  • Experience working with patients, colleagues, and staff with diverse cultural, ethnic/racial backgrounds and sexual orientations
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the delivery of clinical services


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 3 years post-residency work experience
  • Current or significant past college health or young adult medicine experience
  • Experience in medical management of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders
  • Experience with prescribing and managing contraception, including insertion and removal of (LARC) Long-Acting Reversible Contraception devices
  • Skilled in performing POCUS (Point of care ultrasound)
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected Candidate will be required to pass a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check prior to formal job offer. Credentialing includes the following requirements:
    • Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school
    • Current MD or DO California medical license in good standing
    • Board Certification or eligibility in a primary care specialty
    • Current DEA Registration
    • NPI (National Practitioner Identifier) number
    • CA CURES Registration (Department of Justice)
    • Possession of a current BLS CPR certification or must obtain within six months from date of hire
  • Must complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire
  • Must complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview
  • If selected candidate engages in telehealth visits, they must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours.
