Department BSD NSU - Neurological Surgery - Advanced Practice Providers and Other Clinical Staff About the Department The Department of Neurological Surgery is devoted to the evaluation and treatment of both pediatric and adult neurosurgical disorders. Our programs in neurovascular surgery, neuro-oncology, epilepsy, spinal surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, and functional and stereotactic neurosurgery are world-renowned. Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Neurological Surgery is responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management, including advanced levels of assessment, intervention, planning, and evaluation of care throughout the treatment in consultation with physicians and specialized health resources for treatment. The APP manages a caseload of inpatients and exercises autonomous decision-making in assessing, diagnosing, and initiating delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes inpatient and outpatient assessment, treatment and documentation, bedside and operating room procedures, family support, discharge planning, patient education, and consultation with adjunctive services within the hospitals. This position will be primarily deployed at UChicago Medicine - Ingalls Memorial Hospital. Responsibilities Acts as a surgical first assistant in all neurosurgical procedures. Provides surgical and clinical support in multiple clinic locations. Assists in the team effort to prepare for and expedite the start of surgery in the OR. Provides the appropriate preparation of the patient for surgery. Provides appropriate preoperative and postoperative instructions and facilitates discharge planning. Rounds and provides clinical care for in-house patients. Prepares charts for clinic (i.e., obtaining IOE, outside records, pre-charting). Assists physicians and provides independent clinical care to patients in the clinic. Assists the in- and outpatient teams in developing and implementing comprehensive care plans. Follows through in the outpatient setting via communication with appropriate health care providers to ensure proper care and follow-up are provided. Functions as a professional role model for staff while providing expert care in the in- and outpatient setting. Collaborates with care team members and multi-disciplinary team members to provide direct in- and outpatient care. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Participates in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care. Participates in developing, reviewing, and evaluating Surgical 1st Assist procedures. Establishes and maintains a collaborative relationship with health care colleagues. Demonstrates effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills using strategies that promote problem resolution. Keeps knowledge base current by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences. Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions. Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois --- Preferred Qualifications Education: An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA). Experience: Clinical experience in a related area of specialty. Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse: Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant: Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date. Preferred Competencies Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership, and teaching skills. Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments. Ability to interview and obtain medical information. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently. Strong organizational skills. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skills.
