Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Other Conditions: Position is a temporary casual hire position and offers no benefits. 89 day appointment, not to exceed 40 hours/week. Hours may vary. All positions require successful completion of a background check.

Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential functions of the position):

  • *The Assistant Coach will assist with all aspects of NCAA Division I Women’s Beach Volleyball Program, including student recruitment and development, on court coaching, contest scheduling, compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University of Hawaii rules and regulations, student-athlete academic achievement, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach.   
  • *Assist and participate in practices and intercollegiate competitions.   Teach necessary skills from the basic fundamentals of beach volleyball to the techniques and strategies of advanced team play.
  • *Promote and foster a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.  Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the court.
  • *Promote and maintain an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
  • *Assist with evaluating, recruiting and selecting qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.  Actively seek out and encourage a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process.  Work collaboratively with the Compliance, Student Affairs, and Academics Office staff to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.  Make recurring contacts by telephone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits as assigned by the Head Coach. 
  • *Assist with overseeing the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation. 
  • *Assist in scouting of opponents including the exchange and analysis of film.
  • *Assist with securing uniforms and equipment including managing apparel agreement and having all apparel appropriately lettered & numbered and ensuring team has necessary equipment for the season (i.e. balls, carts, nets, and other required equipment and supplies). 
  • *Assist with overseeing all aspects of team travel, including air reservations, securing hotels, ground transportation, per diem allocation and travel requests and completions in an expedient manner. 
  • *Participates in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
  • *Actively participates in fundraising, promotional, and public relation activities for the sports program. 
  • *Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
  • *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • *Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. 
  • *Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.  Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there are reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur. *
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university;
  • Two (2) years of experience coaching competitive beach volleyball at the high school, club, college or professional level.
  • Knowledge of women’s beach volleyball as competed at the collegiate level.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and travel.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the employment start date.
  • Computer, cell phone, and social media technology competency.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

 Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Division I Women's Beach Volleyball coaching experience.
  • Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawai'i's multi-cultural society.
