This is NOT a remote position – the job requires in-person work.  

Duties & Responsibilities:

(NOTE: ** denotes essential functions):

  1. **Perform basic preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on food manufacturing and packaging equipment to ensure optimal production; submit recommendations to the program manager for outsourcing maintenance when not feasible in-house
  2. ** Trouble shoot and repair equipment correctly and on time; submit recommendations to the program manager for outsourcing repairs when not feasible in-house
  1. **Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and provide technical support during production shifts.
  2. **Perform regular inspections and tests on production equipment and systems to identify potential failures and initiate timely repairs.
  3. **Maintain accurate maintenance records and document work performed in a digital format.
  4. **Assist in equipment installations, modifications, and upgrades in support of production improvements and new product lines.
  5. **Procure maintenance supplies, spare parts, and services as needed, following established University of Hawai‘i (UH) System procurement procedures.
  6. **Prepare, process, and manage necessary UH paperwork for procurement, work orders, contracts, and regulatory compliance documentation.
  7. **Ensure repair and maintenance activities comply with food safety, sanitation, general manufacturing procedures (GMPs) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards; follow Maui Food Innovation Center (MFIC) standard operating procedures ( SOP), safety rules, procedures, and policies and maintain a clean and orderly work area; adhere to the equipment manufacturer maintenance guidelines.
  8. **Work collaboratively with entrepreneurs and MFIC staff to support operational needs; collaborate with other stakeholders, departments, and communicate requirements, opportunity areas, the status of work orders, and results.
  9. **Maintain and organize maintenance tools, spare parts inventory, and work areas.
  10. **Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, efficiency, and workplace safety.
  11. **Support and adhere to UH safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  12. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Professional Work Experience
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of machinery and equipment demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with machinery and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the area of machinery and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, Adobe, and Google Workspace.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Industrial Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  2. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and troubleshooting certification (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
  3. Forklift operator certification
  4. Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training
  5. Experience with Preventive and Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM) programs
  6. Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems (480V 3-phase, control systems)
  7. PLC troubleshooting and basic programming
  8. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  9. Robotics/automation systems experience
  10. Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  11. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
  12. Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) software
  13. Knowledge of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food safety and sanitation standards
  14. Familiarity with GMPs
  15. Experience maintaining equipment in a food processing environment
  16. Understanding of CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems and procedures
