Summary
Academic advisors are responsible for directly contributing to the University’s retention and degree completion
goals. Each advisor manages an assigned student caseload, actively supporting students in
in all facets of their transition to the university and attainment of their degree. Following a proactive
model of advising, advisors engage early and often with their assigned caseload, working to resolve
barriers to student persistence. Close monitoring of students’ academic progress, as well as
coordination with faculty, academic support services, and other University resources are expectations of
this role.
Responsibilities*
Student Interaction
- Advises students on course selection, graduation requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and student rights/responsibilities.
- Works systematically with students to create, monitor, assess and update course schedules and degree-completion plans.
- Attends new student orientation sessions, providing registration support, as needed.
- Conducts College Student Inventory (CSI) review meetings with new students.
- Responds to all faculty-initiated and automated alerts within 48 hours.
- Accepts referrals from the campus community regarding student needs and issues, following up directly with students, as needed.
- Assesses student needs, referring students to appropriate university resources, such as Financial Aid, Tutorial Support, Writing Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability and Accessibility Support Services, and Career Services.
- Intensively monitors and engages with students experiencing academic and/or financial difficulties, including those on academic and/or financial aid probation.
- Documents all advising appointments/interactions in the University advisor notes system.
- Maintains a close working relationship with departmental advisors, as well as the Student Success Center staff and director, to ensure seamless advising services across campus.
- Attends University Academic Advising meetings regularly.
Planning and Assessment
- In coordination with faculty of assigned department(s), utilizes technology and data management to assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of retention and student outreach programs. The emphasis is on systems dedicated to student academic success, such as those rooted in early academic warning, predictive modeling, and developmental academic advising.
- Contributes to the development of short- and long-term plans for unit/department(s).
- Maintains relationships with academic and student affairs offices to ensure that students and faculty advisors are aware of resources, workshops, and support systems on campus.
- Carries out other assigned duties consistent with scope of the position.
Recruitment
- Participates in prospective-student recruitment for the University.
- Assists with developing presentations in support of recruiting efforts.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor’s degree in a related profession such as Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Student
Affairs or other relevant disciplines. - A minimum of two years of experience working with students in an academic setting, preferably
at the collegiate level. - Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication and empathy.
- Demonstrated self-starter that is highly motivated.
- Demonstrated appreciation for, and deep understanding of, diversity and inclusion.
Desired Qualifications*
- Demonstrated record of creating and implementing excellent student-centered programming
- Demonstrated understanding of data assessment and quality improvement techniques.
- Masters Degree preferred
- Knowledge of Web Focus, Banner, Student Information System (SIS), and Degree Works
- Knowledge of University policies and practices
