The Mechanical Engineer position is within the Technical Service Center (TSC) in UNH’s College of Engineering & Physical Sciences (CEPS). The TSC’s core mission is to provide specialized technical services to teaching and research laboratories/facilities in CEPS to advance the college’s academic and research programs.
The Mechanical Engineer primarily supports the Ocean Engineering program and the Jere A. Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory (hereafter, Chase Lab). The Mechanical Engineer also provides technical support to other CEPS programs (e.g., Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering) and facilities as needed. The Mechanical Engineer supports the college’s academic and research programs – graduate and undergraduate – as well as external users of Chase Lab facilities.
This position is not classified as essential staff and is not required to work during curtailment.

Duties/Responsibilities
Engineering and Technical Support for CEPS and External User Activities in Chase Lab (50%)
- Maintain, repair, and enhance Chase Lab equipment and facilities, including but not limited to the tow/wave tank, the engineering tank, the oscillating flume system, and shop equipment. The tow tank includes a servo-hydraulic system for wave paddle actuation and a servo-electric motion control system for the tow carriage. The Mechanical Engineer is required to gain a full understanding of the tanks’ motion control (and other electrical and mechanical) systems in order to diagnose and repair problems and to make modifications to serve the needs of internal and external users. This includes learning the LabVIEW programs and Python algorithms that run those systems.
- Develop, review, and update standard operating procedures for Chase Lab equipment and facilities.
- Develop effective policies for shared use of Chase Lab workspaces and coordinate multiple shared uses, including facilities infrastructure work by internal and external contractors. This includes coordinating the (re)configuration/(re)organization of Chase Lab space to accommodate current and future uses.
- Serve as a technical advisor for CEPS undergraduate student projects that rely on Chase Lab facilities.
- Support the use of Chase Lab facilities by external users. This includes the review of work proposals submitted by external users; administration of operational and safety training; supervision of work; technical consultation and operational support.
- Serve as a main point of contact for all support needs related to CEPS activities in Chase Lab.
- Train faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students on the proper and safe use of Chase Lab equipment and facilities, particularly the tow carriage system, the wave maker system, the oscillating flume system, and shop equipment.
- Serve as the crane/hoist safety and training coordinator for Chase Lab and Gregg Hall. This includes working with UNH Environmental Health & Safety to ensure compliance with established safety policies.
- Assist the TSC with projects across CEPS, including but not limited to instrument and equipment maintenance/repairs in other departments, particularly Civil & Environmental Engineering. Additional projects could include CEPS/Chase Lab outreach events (e.g., Ocean Discovery Day) and the UNH Undergraduate Research Conference.
- Consult on research projects that include the design and fabrication of new custom equipment. This includes mechanical, fluid mechanical, and heat transfer analyses.
- Serve as a technical advisor for graduate research projects.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or scientific field related to the technical work to be performed.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical systems.
- Strong maintenance and operational knowledge of pumps, motors, and hydraulic systems.
- Mechanical design experience.
- Good general construction, carpentry, and machine shop skills.
- Basic electronics/electrical knowledge, including the ability to read schematics and use multimeters and related test equipment.
- Basic computer programming skills, and the ability to learn new software used in control and data acquisition systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to interact positively and collaboratively in a team environment that includes students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
- Ability to work independently.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to wear and use personal protective equipment as necessary.
- Sufficient manual dexterity and physical strength to perform the duties of the position.
- Familiarity with National Instruments products, particularly LabVIEW.
- Familiarity with the Python programming language.
- Experience operating forklifts, cranes, and hoists.
