Position Summary

Oversees the daily operations, management, and staffing of the Experimental Art and Technology and Art and Ecology labs and classrooms in the Department of Art. Ensures the smooth and efficient functioning of the labs and the safe use and maintenance of equipment and facilities. The EAT/A&E Lab Manager will also hire and supervise one workstudy for Painting and Drawing as well as order supplies for P&D and Art Practices. This position will not involve teaching any classes during regular daytime hours of the facilities (8 am – 5 pm).

· The Lab Manager is responsible for EAT/A&E shared equipment checkout. Responsibilities include:

o Developing policy and protocol around shared equipment, reservations, and student access; implementing appropriate inventory control systems and maintaining inventory databases.

o Providing training on specialized technology and tools to students, student employees, and faculty.

o Establishing and maintaining policies regarding safe use of equipment; conducting safety orientations for students and faculty on the proper use of equipment and materials.

o Maintaining a thorough record of equipment condition and needed service; conducting a full inventory and status evaluation once per semester.

o Working with accountants, administrators, and the IT department on purchasing new items, updating obsolete software/systems, and repairing damaged equipment.

· The Lab Manager is responsible for EAT/A&E labs, Lannan Reading Room, classrooms, and facility spaces. Responsibilities include:

o Overseeing day-to-day technical, educational, and research support activities conducted in the laboratory; contributing to planning and reviewing area's performance.

o Monitoring expenses and managing the allocated budget for each semester; preparing internal reports for management.

o Operational assistance and maintenance of classroom technologies including computers, AV devices, and other digital peripherals; ordering and restocking of consumables such as paper and printer ink.

o Administration of a shared, online calendar for facility reservation and scheduling.

o Establishing and maintaining policies regarding safe use of the facilities; ensuring all doors, closets, and cabinets are locked and secured.

o Cataloguing the Lannan Reading Room collection; this includes completing relevant training for updating and managing the database within the UNM library system

o Fostering a positive and cooperative lab and classroom environment.

· The Lab Manager supervises a number of student employees each semester. Responsibilities include:

o Scheduling student employees and assigning responsibilities.

o Training student employees on equipment, hardware, and software.

o Fostering a positive and cooperative work environment.

· The Lab Manager assists in developing technological resources in support of EAT/A&E curriculum. Responsibilities include:

o Working closely with faculty to assess classroom and instructional technology needs; developing solutions to support the teaching goals of both areas.

o Working with faculty to develop interdisciplinary capacity in the labs, with the long-term objective of increasing availability and accessibility of resources to students across campus.

o Finding creative solutions to issues arising with interdisciplinary projects and collaborations; a willingness to participate in open-ended inquiry and experimentation.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience

  • BFA/BA Art Studio, or at least 3.5 years towards this degree in Studio Art, with an emphasis in Electronic Arts, including coursework in Electronic Arts or comparable experience.
  • At least two years of experience working with students and faculty – or comparable in terms of teacher/client.

Technical Knowledge

  • Experience and working knowledge of Mac, PC, and Linux computers 
  • Experience and working knowledge of digital peripheral equipment including digital still and video cameras, scanners, projectors, and digital sound equipment
  • Experience and working knowledge of digital fabrication software and hardware including 3D printers, CAD workflow, and 3D modeling software
  • Experience and working knowledge of software programs used in contemporary art practices and awareness of emergent technologies in the larger field
