UNC Continuing Dental Education is committed to providing quality programs featuring the latest advances in science and technology that allow all dental professionals to stay current with new knowledge and innovations in the field of dentistry.

The mission of the Office of Continuing Dental Education (CDE) is to improve the knowledge base and advance the practice of dentistry through quality educational activities. By offering activities that feature current research in science and technology, we help dentists and dental team members advance their knowledge and skills and promote innovations in the field.

The Office of CDE serves a global constituency, including Adams School of Dentistry faculty, staff, and dental professionals in North Carolina, the nation, and beyond.

The Adams School of Dentistry, established in 1950 and made possible by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, is now part of a dynamic Health Science campus! The school provides oral health care to more than 90,000 patients each year! With more than 6,400 living alumni in 27 nations and all 50 states, the school’s impact to oral health in North Carolina, throughout the U.S., and around the world is unprecedented. The Adams School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the first dental school in the state of North Carolina. The ASOD consists of seven (7) Academic Departments: Biomedical Sciences, Craniofacial and Surgical Care (Craniofacial Center, Geriatrics/Special Care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Medicine), Restorative Sciences (General Dentistry, Operative & Biomaterials and Prosthodontics), Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Orthodontics, Diagnostic Sciences (Oral Microbiology, Orofacial Pain/Sleep, Pathology and Radiology) and Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene (one department). Position Summary
The Director, Continuing Dental Education has primary responsibility for leading the Continuing Dental Education (CDE) and Dental AHEC Program Division, which supports the teaching, lifelong learning, research, and service activities of the Adams School of Dentistry. Activities encompass four major areas: (1) Continuing Dental Education, (2) Dental Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program, (3) the NC Academy of Advanced Clinical Dentistry (NC Academy), and (4) the Remediation program for the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners (NCSBDE).

These activities reinforce the Adams School of Dentistry’s mission to educate and empower the next generation of leaders in oral health care through excellence in education, research, patient care, and service, demonstrating responsible stewardship of our profession. We serve the people of North Carolina and beyond and strive for global impact and to serve as the leader for oral health care professionals through our innovative curriculum, interdisciplinary research, and commitment to collaborative patient care.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities relevant to the teaching assignment, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Considerable experience in adult professional education, preferably in a college or university setting. Experience with reviewing, developing and applying accreditation guidelines; Reviewing and negotiating contracts. Developing budgets for CE events and the Continuing Dental Education office. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a high degree of professionalism is required.

The nature of this position will require that the employee interact with the Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD) faculty, staff, students, the Dean and other ASOD and University administrators, UNC ASOD alumni and friends. Local, state, national and international dental professionals. Additional contacts include corporate sponsors, corporate and no-profit exhibitors, the members and personnel of the NC Dental Society, the NC State Board of Dental Examiners, UNC dental alumni, American Dental Association officers and staff, the national Association of Continuing Dental Education officers and members, the NC AHEC state administrators, NC AHEC regional directors and the NC AHEC Central office. Some travel is involved.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Detail-oriented person who can concentrate on complex administrative and accounting functions, and have the ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and a working knowledge of a wide range of office procedures, software and equipment. Strong computer skills and experience with LMS. Experience with UNC Finance systems, Concur and Learning Stream a plus.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. to transport conference supplies to various venues.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
