Responsibilities

This is specialized professional pharmacy work performing clinical pharmacy functions in the University of South Alabama Hospitals. Work is performed under limited supervision by pharmacy leadership and is reviewed for compliance with established practices and procedures.

Responsibilities

An employee in a position allocated to this classification is responsible for:

  • Developing and coordinating therapeutic programs with physicians and nurses
  • Developing and coordinating specialized training and in-service educational programs for students, patients, pharmacy personnel, nurses, and physicians
  • Coordinating clinical research activities and investigational drug handling
  • Developing, implementing, and coordinating protocols related to clinical pharmacy services
  • Monitoring and reviewing medication errors and adverse drug reactions
  • Measuring the appropriateness and quality of drug utilization
  • Performing consultations
  • Performing and supervising dispensing functions
  • Regular and prompt attendance
  • Working schedules as defined and overtime as required
  • Performing other related duties as required

To be successful in this role, a pharmacist must demonstrate the following skills

  • The ability to think critically, applying knowledge gained through education and experience to address real world clinical challenges
  • The ability to keep up to date with research, advances, and practice changes affecting our profession and our patient population
  • Basic math skills used in the calculation of doses, infusion rates, pharmacokinetic parameters, drug product dilutions, and other problems related to the procurement, ordering, preparation, dispensing, administration, and assessment of medications and their use
  • Time management skills that allow the pharmacist to triage multiple competing responsibilities and prioritize them in the best interest of patient care
  • Familiarity with the applicable regulations, rules, laws, statutes, guidelines, policies, etc. (local, state, and federal) that impact the practice of pharmacy in the hospital setting
  • The ability to work on multidisciplinary teams to achieve desired results
  • Effective and proactive verbal and written communication
  • The ability to engender trust from the medical staff and other members of the care team
  • The ability to direct oneself to identify and complete necessary tasks with minimal supervision
  • Effectively convey information to diverse audiences, including those with a different level of education, communication ability, or pharmaceutical knowledge
  • Critically assess information sources to assure that one’s recommendations and practices are current, prudent, evidence based, and in the patient's best interest
  • Mastery of the fundamentals of basic sciences (physiology, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, mathematics, etc.) such that the pharmacist can use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to reach valid conclusions and recommend a reasonable course of action even in the absence of explicit guidance
  • Basic statistical analysis abilities
  • Leadership capabilities to guide technicians and other members of the care team

Qualifications

Graduation from a recognized school of pharmacy with a Pharm D. degree and completion of a one year post-doctoral residency program; or Graduation from a recognized school of pharmacy and three years of clinical/hospital pharmacy experience. Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama and Controlled Substances certificate. Completion of an approved Alabama Board of Pharmacy IV certification program is required within three months of employment.

Pharm D. degree preferred.
