Purpose

The Space and Geophysics Laboratory (SGL) delivers capabilities to government customers for diverse applications, from real-time data-intensive network operations to standalone remote field systems.

Applied Research Laboratories is a University Affiliated Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin, located on the Pickle Research Campus in North Austin. Through fundamental research, innovative science, and applied engineering, ARL:UT makes significant contributions in support of national security.

Within ARL:UT, the Space and Geophysics Laboratory (SGL) engages in research in electromagnetic propagation, geo-positioning, and remote sensing. The lab monitors the long-term performance of GPS, addresses the specification of government geodetic-quality GPS receivers, and designs and executes government tests for industry-produced receivers.

We are seeking a Senior CAD Specialist to prepare and maintain quality hardware mechanical and facility design documentation. This person will be responsible for
preparing mechanical/schematic drawings of electronic devices and products, IT infrastructures and site and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Create network and system interconnect drawings, including lists, labels, interconnection diagrams, and other associated drawings.

• Document hardware modifications and system upgrades. Includes schematics, lists, labels, layout drawings, wiring drawings, isometric drawings, assemblies, and other associated drawings.

• Provide logistical support for worldwide station network.

• Support field operations and deployments.

• Assist with document management, retrieval, and distribution.

• Provide user-level maintenance of CAD equipment, such as printers, plotters and scanners.

• Produce simple photographs of devices and equipment.

• Perform inventory tracking of related tools and equipment, such as cameras.

• Other related functions as assigned.

• HS/GED

• Four or more years relevant professional work experience.

• Demonstrated familiarity with ASME standards.

• Demonstrated familiarity with 3D parametric modeling.

• Demonstrated knowledge or ability to produce technical documentation in recent versions of Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, and Vault.

• Demonstrated knowledge or ability to express and present technical principles, and posess excellent writing, editing, and information organizational skills.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate technical detail to staff and stakeholders of varying backgrounds and experiences.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively with peers, clients, and management, with a strong commitment to contribution and enabling the entire team.

• Strong organizational skills and focus.

• Strong analytical and problem solving capability.

• Able to work under pressure across multiple projects with tight deadlines.

• Able to accept supervision and frequently changing project parameters.

• Ability to work independently as well as with peers, clients, and management.

• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

• Associate Degree in Computer-Aided Design/Drafting

• Two or more years experience providing CAD services in support of hardware mechanical design or manufacturing.

• Two or more years experience providing CAD services in support of facilities design or construction.

• Two or more years experience providing CAD services in support of IT infrastructure design or construction. (Such as data center layout drawings, rack elevations, wiring diagrams, data center power or HVAC layout drawings, data center floor plans or building plans.)

• Immediate or previous eligibility to classified information.

• Experience with version control systems, especially GitLab.

• Experience with collaborative project management systems, especially Atlassian Jira.

• Five or more years relevant professional work experience

• Familiarity with Agile project management techniques using Jira or similar Agile management tools
