Job Summary

Performs complex accounting tasks such as preparing financial statements including balance sheets, cash flow statements, and endowment funds. Reviews and analyzes general ledger account balances. Provides direction and oversight of all financial and budgeting accounts of the merged College of Mines and Earth Sciences. Create College financial budgets and analyze variances in annual budgets. Provides guidance and mentorship to Departmental accounting personnel within the College. Reports to the Associate Director of Finance & Accounting in the College of Science, providing guidance in the development and application of methods of efficiency and transparency in the management of college financial resources.

Responsibilities

1. Responsible for leading and coordinating efforts in the College to prepare annual budgets and reports. Guide and assist department chairs and the Dean with developing the documentation needed for the annual budget book submission. 2. Lead the efforts of staff to ensure timely reconciliation of accounts according to GAAP . Reviews budgets quarterly to actual expenditures. Conduct special projects, analyze financial documents and historical data, prepare financial reports based upon derived statistics and analysis performed, and advise the Dean and department Chairs to enable effective strategic decision-making. 3. Understands financial issues in academic units, including managing state funding, F&A, RO, startup funds, endowments, and grants and contracts. 4. Audit work practices and procedures across the College for better operational efficiency and potential issues in accounts, financial processes, and internal controls; ensuring compliance with the University’s policies and regulatory requirements. 5. Work collaboratively with the management team to advance the College’s efforts in assuring financial transparency, ensuring alignment with University’s short- and long-term goals and objectives. 6. Serves as accounting liaison for assigned departments. Answers questions, corrects errors, resolves accounting-related issues, and provides financial or other information as requested. 7. Acts as a liaison with the Office of Sponsored Projects, General Accounting, Grants & Contracts, Payroll, Travel, Purchasing, and Accounts Payable. 8. Reconciles accounts maintained by the Dean’s office monthly. 9. May assist with post-award management of project funds ensuring that faculty follow project rules and regulations, subcontract management, project planning for expenditures, billing activity, account reconciliation, and project closeout. 10. Oversee position management including staff recruitment and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
