Job Summary:

The Budget Planner will join a team of 5 other professionals in the College of Letters & Science Budget Office to perform highly responsible professional budgeting, fund management, project management, financial planning, guidance and analysis. Provides budget and policy analysis for complex units and/or organizational budgets containing a variety of funding sources of multiple programs. Develops short- and long-term budgetary projections, annual operating budgets, and funding/resource analyses. Makes recommendations for compensation funding and faculty/staff planning. Will provide guidance to other financial professionals to ensure effective budget planning, personnel funding and fund/financial management for the unit.

The College of Letters & Science offers a broad liberal arts and sciences education with complex organizational structure with projects on eleven funds and six activities with expenditures exceeding $170 million (over $28 million related to non-salary expenditures) and over 2100 UW-Foundation Funds with approximately $50M in cash.

Responsibilities:

Provides budget and policy analysis for complex unit or organizational budgets containing a variety of funding sources of multiple programs. Develops short- and long-term budgetary projections, annual operating budgets, and program cost analyses. Makes recommendations for compensation and staff planning and may provide guidance to other budget planners to ensure effective budget planning for the unit.
  • 15% Develops and monitors complex budgets and short- and long-term budgetary projections
  • 10% Analyzes, identifies, and makes recommendations for cost savings and funding options by conducting research on diverse institutional data
  • 20% Conducts program and budget research, analyzes data, and prepares complex financial reports in accordance with established procedures and regulations
  • 10% Assists in the development of operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
  • 10% Provides guidance and direction to other analysts on budgetary analysis and reporting activities
  • 20% Serves as a point of contact for staff providing budgetary information and guidance, answering questions, and responding to inquiries
  • 15% Assists with forecasting revenue/expenses, fund audits, financial transfers. Creates KB documents, participates in virtual office hrs/unit meetings.

Qualifications:

Required:
1. Demonstrated experience with financial/funding systems software and preparation of complex reports and data.
2. Ability to interpret and apply complex university, state, federal, and granting agency rules, regulations, and guidelines.
3. Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
4. High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
5. Demonstrated experience in providing excellent customer service and ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships.
6. Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to positively interact with a variety of people and to work independently to meet goals and work assignments.

Preferred:
1. Three years in Accounting, Finance or Financial/Funding Management in higher education or similar large complex organization.
2. Knowledge of UW, State, and Federal rules and regulations and/or experience managing finances within an institution of higher education.
3. Ability to interpret policies and regulations and apply them to practical situations and to exercise good judgment in recognizing where deviation from standard policies or processes may be appropriate.
4. Experience with UW's financial systems: JET, SFS, WISER; and with personnel system: HRS.
5. Strong analytical skills and the ability to organize, interpret, and analyze data.
6. Ability to independently determine priorities, resolve problems, and stay on task and deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment. Ability to represent the office in a highly professional manner.
7. Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner both independently and collaboratively, gathering and analyzing relevant information, and developing alternative solutions.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $64,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $64,000 - $91,100 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $63,800 - $118,400. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
