The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who plays a crucial role within the care delivery team. Their responsibilities encompass several key areas:

  • Setting Standards: The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains high standards for the level and quality of care provided.
  • Provision of Nursing Care: They hold responsibility, authority, and accountability for delivering nursing care to patients.
  • Patient Care Management: The Professional Staff Nurse actively manages and provides care to a group of patients and their families. This involves applying independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with all team members.
  • Collaboration and Relationships: They build and maintain collaborative relationships with physicians, other healthcare providers, and patients and their families. This collaboration spans the entire continuum of care.
  • Community Commitment: The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a strong commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

Patient-Centered Care:

  • Formulates patient goals and develops a comprehensive care plan that actively involves the patient as a partner.
  • Considers individual patient needs holistically.
  • Triage patient situations and collaborate closely with physicians.
  • Assist physicians in all aspects of patient care, including assessment, evaluation, and education.
  • Apply critical thinking to identify clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues within an episode of care.
  • Communicate effectively, translating patient conditions for other care providers and advocating for changes in care practices.
  • Maintain comprehensive patient documentation to facilitate communication among caregivers.
  • Align with national professional standards and organizational goals to enhance patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Foster compassionate healing relationships with patients and their families.

Interpersonal Skills and Adaptability:

  • Establishes and nurtures positive, compassionate relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary staff, and patients and their families.
  • Thrives in complex environments, adeptly handling changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities across various aspects of patient care.
  • Leads others in applying the nursing process, emphasizing critical thinking skills.

Practice Skills:

  • Maintains mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Possesses physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.
  • Applies adult learning principles (and potentially teaching children) when educating patients, families, students, and new staff.
  • Provides detailed and relevant guidance during patient care, both in-office and through phone or written communication at home.
  • Supports the growth of students, new staff, and colleagues by fostering open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous improvement.
