PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Refugio Unaccompanied Children Shelter and Foster Care Program is a 24-hour program that serves young persons in immigration custody who are awaiting release to their sponsors.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Responsible for the academic progress of their assigned students from preschool age up to and including ages between 13 – 17 years old depending on the program, as well as planning instruction and setting goals, implementing curriculum, communicating standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students. Work with other staff members to ensure the best possible learning environment for unaccompanied children.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide direct education formation to youth in a classroom setting.
  • Create age-appropriate lesson plans and review and revise as needed.
  • Maintain sensitivity to the culture of each student.
  • Focus educational interventions on the initial outcomes of an educational assessment conducted when each youth is admitted to the program.
  • Attend and monitor education field trips.
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Upon request, this role may be required to travel with UAC, 14 and under, to locations in the United States.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to see at a normal distance, hear normal conversations and sounds, and use hands and fingers to fill out required forms.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Education
  • Experience: Secondary teaching and relevant supervisory and assessment experience
  • Competencies:
    • Professional: Diversity, Communication, Planning, Organizing, Critical Thinking, Interpersonal Relations, Creativity;
    • Technical: Education Methods, Learning Environment, Ongoing Assessment, Trauma, Dual Language;
    • Organizational: Leadership, Teamwork, Community Approach.
  • Skills: Office 0365, Bilingual (English – Spanish
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • English Second Language Certificate
  • State Teacher Certificate
  • Master’s degree in Education
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Employment is conditional pending satisfactory results of all required tests and background
checks mentioned above. Periodic physical examinations and TB clearances will be required if hired.
