Job Summary
The Research Technician I will assist with cutting edge cell biology research using microscopy, biochemistry, molecular biology, and lipid analysis techniques. While previous lab experience is preferred, we will provide the necessary training. The position is ideally suited for someone considering graduate school or medical school and who wants to spend a few years in a lab first.
The technician will prepare media and buffer for the experiments. The candidate will engineer yeast strains and mammalian cell lines to investigate the role of specific proteins in organelle formations. Tools that will be used by the technician will include genetic modification by knock-out cassette in yeast, SiRNA, ShRNA and knock-out and knock-in CRISPR in mammalian cells; cloning multiple plasmids using bacteria E. coli; fluorescence microscopy with high end confocal and brightfield microscope; lipid analysis using HPLC and TLC; and protein purification.
Experience and Education
· Completion of two (2) years of college or specialized training in histology, medical technology, or relevant field and one (1) year experience as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or
· High school graduation includes courses in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc., and three (3) years of laboratory experience including two years as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Department Expectations
· One year of previous experience working in a cell biology or biochemistry laboratory.
· Experience growing E. coli and/or yeast and mammalian cells.
· Knowledge of how to use a wide-field fluorescence microscope.
Job Duties
· Assists in conducting experiments and working on research problems in such fields as physiology, bacteriology, tissue culture, chemistry and other related fields by performing basic, routine, and least complex procedures as prescribed by supervisor.
· Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
· Records resulting data in accordance with established methods. Confers with supervisor concerning results obtained and modifies procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
