ACTUARIAL ANALYST I

FLSA Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

The Actuarial Analyst I position supports PEHP’s mission through preparing internal and external reports and analysis, participating in innovation within the team, and maintaining standards of work quality and customer trust.  The position works with PEHP’s actuarial staff on healthcare analytics, underwriting, and actuarial tasks. Successful performance in this position will require rapid progress in technical work using Excel and SQL, attention to detail, and proficiency in established processes. This position may be eligible for the Actuarial Student Program.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Checks reports for accuracy and reasonableness and uses the established data disclosure protocol.
  • Creates reports using Excel, SQL, and Tableau. Reports may require statistical or risk adjusted procedures. Interprets and defends analysis.
  • Responds to underwriting requests for proposals.
  • Prices basic benefits using benefit pricing template or benefit adjuster model.
  • Analyzes Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) model for large agencies.
  • Performs recurring reconciliation of department databases to the authoritative data source.
  • Documents work processes.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as required, which may include assisting with underwriting and data analytics job duties.

    ACTUARIAL ANALYST II

    FLSA Exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Actuarial Analyst II position supports PEHP’s mission through preparing models and analysis for internal and external customers, innovating with the team, and maintaining standards of work quality and customer trust.  This position works with PEHP’s actuarial staff on healthcare analytics, underwriting, and actuarial tasks. Successful performance in this position will require mastery of technical work in Excel and SQL, ownership of an internal customer’s needs, and the ability to work independently at a high level. This position may be eligible for the Actuarial Student Program.

     

               

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Provides updates and peer reviews for actuarial and underwriting models and results.
  • Assists with intermediate level benefit pricing such as responding to basic fiscal note requests under the direction of the Actuarial Manager.
  • Provides reporting support for group term life and/or long-term disability medical waiver premium benefit.
  • Supports monthly update of existing Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) models.
  • Maintains reports and models for the reinsurance program.
  • Researches projects involving data collection, scrubbing, and summarization utilizing SQL, Excel, Tableau, and administration systems.
  • Creates reports using Excel, SQL, and Tableau. Reports may require statistical or risk adjusted procedures. Interprets and defends analysis.
  • Responds to underwriting requests for proposals and supports the renewal process.
  • Documents work processes.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as required, which may include assisting with underwriting and data analytics job duties.

    ACTUARIAL ANALYST III

    FLSA Exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Provide routine and ad hoc actuarial and analytical management support for decision making processes.  Serve as the subject matter expert for prospective reinsurance. This position may be eligible for the Actuarial Student Program.

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Peer review actuarial and underwriting models and results
  • Respond to non-basic fiscal note requests under the direction of the Chief Actuary.
  • Assist in updating prospective reinsurance rate model for specific and aggregate coverage. Track reinsurance experience on a monthly basis by preparing experience reports for both internal and external use.
  • Manage monthly update of the IBNR (Incurred but Not Reported) model.
  • Write new SQL queries to support departmental research and analysis.
  • Update benefit adjustment model.
  • Assist with year-end reserve certification support. Help manage external consultant data requests.
  • Perform competitive analysis using the coordination of benefits (COB) model.
  • Update, review, and analyze monthly paid and allowed historical trend analysis.
  • Assist with the recalibration of the demographic factor model.
  • As necessary, assist in training of Actuarial Analyst I & II in job duties.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary, which may include assisting with underwriting and data analytics job duties as needed.
  • Required Experience

     

    ACTUARIAL ANALYST I

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree with a strong emphasis in mathematics, economics, actuarial science, or some other quantitative field and passed at least one (1) Society of Actuaries exams; or a Master's in Statistics, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Relevant internship is preferred.

    Experience in Tableau and VBA is preferred.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Actuarial principles and methodologies.

    Must possess excellent communication skills:

    • Read and interpret technical studies, papers, and textbooks.
    • Draft routine correspondence.

    Must have the ability to:

    • Follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Prioritize work.
    • Perform within deadlines.
    • Work well in a team environment as well as independently.
    • Multi-task by handling a variety of duties in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Follow through with assignments.
    • Deal effectively with stress caused by workload and time deadlines.

     

    The incumbent must always demonstrate judgment, high integrity, and personal values consistent with the values of URS.

     

    Work Environment

    Incumbent performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities which do not generally involve muscular strain, but do require activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions.

     

     

    ACTUARIAL ANALYST II

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree with a strong emphasis in mathematics, economics, actuarial science or some other quantitative field, passed at least three (3) Society of Actuaries exams, and at least one (1) year of actuarial experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Experience in Tableau and VBA is preferred.

    Bachelor’s degree with a strong emphasis in mathematics, economics, actuarial science, or some other quantitative field; passed at least five (5) Society of Actuaries exams; at least two (2) years of actuarial experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Experience in Tableau and Visual Basics for Applications (VBA) are preferred.

    Required technical skills include the working knowledge of:

    • Microsoft Excel. Must have ability to trace flow of data and calculations in complex Excel models.

    Required excellent mathematical skills such as:

    • Apply advanced mathematical concepts to practical situations.

    Required actuarial skills include academic understanding of:

    • Risk scores including how and when to apply them in actuarial analysis.
