Oral Surgery Assistant Job Description

Provide clinical chairside assistance:

  • Wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Prepare treatment room, patient, instruments and materials
  • Discuss a patient's medical history, use monitors and recordvital signs
  • Use a tablet to enter medical history information
  • Help patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
  • Record treatment and notes in the patient record
  • Protect patient privacy; follows all HIPAA policies and laws
  • Assist in surgical procedures
  • Take Impressions for study models or diagnostic casts
  • Provide post-op instructions

Perform Infection Control procedures:

  • Wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Follow all Infection Control protocols and procedures
  • Breakdown and disinfect surgical equipment and rooms
  • Sterilize surgical instruments
  • Clean dental chairs and equipment
  • Properly dispose of sharps and bio-hazardous materials
  • Complete weekly spore testing
  • Clean autoclaves monthly

Act as a Dental Radiation Technologist:

  • Confirm pregnancy status of female patients
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Use lead apron to protect patients
  • Expose radiographs ordered by a dentist
  • Disinfect x-ray equipment after each patient

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Be prepared to assist the oral surgeonin a patient emergency
  • Inventory emergency medications monthly
  • Maintain CPR certification
  • Knowwhere to locate the emergency kit and oxygen
  • Follow emergency protocols
  • Attend monthly emergency drills

Clinic Maintenance:

  • Inventory dental instruments and materials
  • Stock dental materials
  • Order surgical supplies
  • Clean and disinfect all areas outside surgicalrooms including sterilization, lab, x-ray, consultation and storage areas
  • Maintain and change surgical suction
  • Clean and maintain sterilization
  • Complete weekly and monthly task lists

Administrative Tasks:

  • Answer incoming calls and schedule new patient appointments
  • Assist with obtaining referrals, x-rays and pharmacy information
  • Schedule follow up appointments
  • Prepare and send referral letters
  • Prepare required documentation for hospital cases
  • Obtain necessary pre-authorizations for hospital cases
  • Follow up on pathology orders
  • Administrative duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Oral Surgery Assistants must be comfortable working in an active healthcare environment. Oral Surgery Assistants work as directed and/or licensed under the direct supervision of the Oral Surgeon. They must be able to work efficiently and coordinate with other team members. They should have good communication skills and be comfortable communicating with the general public. This is a full time position; 30 to 40 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

Oral Surgery Assistants must be able to stand for extended periods of time, bend and lean to assist in treatment. Oral Surgery Assistants must be able to use dental instruments, materials and equipment to assist in providing dental care. They must be able to walk throughout the day, transport trays and materials and perform maintenance and cleaning of equipment which may require stretching, using a step stool, bending and kneeling to complete those tasks. Oral Surgery Assistants must be able to frequently use a tablet, computer keyboard and mouse.
