Job Description: Vatn Systems is looking for a talented contract to hire CFD Engineer to join our innovative team on a contract-to-hire basis. The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimize and characterize the performance of our AUV, focusing on hydrodynamics, stability, control, and efficiency. The role will initially be under contract for a preliminary scope of work to assess capabilities and fit with the team, and the intention is to transition to a full-time position.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct CFD simulations to analyze fluid dynamics of AUV designs under various operational conditions, ensuring optimal performance and stability.
  • Develop and validate high-fidelity computational models using industry-standard software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM , Solidworks Flow, Numeca, or OpenFOAM).
  • Collaborate closely with the mechanical engineering team to quickly iterate on AUV designs based on simulation results with the ability to update vehicle geometries in CAD or otherwise propose and assess design options.
  • Analyze simulation data, creating comprehensive reports and presentations for internal stakeholders indicating areas of concern and recommending design changes
  • Support an interdisciplinary team in the development of an in-house 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) vehicle simulation model to predict performance, optimize control systems, and assess new functionalities
  • Stay current with advancements in CFD techniques and underwater vehicle technology


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in CFD analysis, particularly in marine or underwater applications.
  • Proficiency in CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Star-CCM , Solidworks Flow, Numeca, or OpenFOAM.
  • Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks (preferred), CATIA, NX, or similar.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical findings clearly to cross-functional teams.
  • Team player who is proactive in problem-solving and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for marine technology and the future of autonomous underwater systems.
  • Interest and availability to transition to a full time position with Vatn Systems


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with 6-DOF simulation models and system identification for underwater vehicles.
  • Familiarity with parametric optimization in solid modeling and simulation
  • Background in control systems or vehicle dynamics for AUVs or underwater robots
  • Portfolio of previous projects exemplifying the above qualifications
