What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spring 2025: High School Intern, Restoring Promise position at Vera Institute of Justice?

About the role:

The Restoring Promise high school intern will support the Designed for Dignity project on research and technical assistance efforts. The purpose of the position is to expose the intern to a variety of different responsibilities and tasks associated with justice reform work, as well as general exposure to working in a large organization. The intern will be given key opportunities to develop skills in technical assistance, critical analysis, research, implementation support, partnership-building, problem-solving, and project management.

What you'll do:

Research

  • Enter and clean data for manual surveys of young adults and staff for Designed for Dignity project
  • Support data visualization efforts for Designed for Dignity presentations
  • Transcribe qualitative interviews and/or focus groups
  • Document process for Designed for Dignity (attend meetings and note-take in a standardized document)

Technical assistance

  • Provide technical support for meetings and trainings held virtually
  • Join external and internal meetings and assist with notetaking
  • Conduct policy review
  • Support data visualization and presentations
  • Administrative support

Learning and development

  • Participate in trainings from Restoring Promise staff on data entry, analysis, visualization, and policy review.
  • Attend learning opportunities related to justice reform and share notes with Restoring Promise team.
  • Engage in/actively participate in weekly meetings with the full team.
  • Attend, with the aim to engage in, meetings with external partners, stakeholders, and organizations.
  • Attend monthly department and Institute meetings.
  • One on one supervision, training, and guidance from research and technical assistance leadership.

Initiative support

  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Compile information for progress reports, presentations, and materials for funders and partners.
  • Assist with the development of written reports, presentations, and other publications.

What qualifications are we looking for?

  • High school senior at Institute for Collaborative Education

Location:

Please note this role will report to our Brooklyn, NY office. Vera interns and employees adhere to a hybrid schedule and are in-office on an alternating schedule. Full-time positions generally amount to 10 days per month. Part-time positions generally amount to 5 days per month.

Schedule:

The intern should be available to work up to 24 hours per week during the spring. The dates will be between February 3 and June 20, 2025, with some flexibility to accommodate personal and academic schedules.

Compensation:

Please note that this is an unpaid internship opportunity.
