What are the responsibilities and job description for the SPLICING TECHNICIAN position at Verizon?
Summary
Add, place, remove, reroute, set up, rack, splice, transfer, repair, rearrange, bond, pressurize, and test aerial, underground, and buried cable. Mount, cut-in, and repair cable terminal and load cases. Rearrange service drops, aerial and buried jumper wire and step poles. Read and interpret engineering work orders. Test, locate and repair defects in wires for copper cables and fibers for fiber optic cables, using electrical and mechanical testing apparatus.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Performing work operations in connection with providing communications service.
B. Operate a computer or tablet to receive work assignments and to access applications like email and software such as documents and spreadsheets.
C. Reviewing, interpreting and analyzing service requests, work orders, and circuit diagrams in order to complete required work. Completing all related administrative paperwork tasks, time and material reporting (time sheets), inspection reports, and inventory reports.
D. Reading and interpreting engineering plans, vendor specifications for the installation and repair of optic and electronic equipment, and interacting with the Engineering Group.
E. Making necessary preparations required for splicing, rearranging and terminate cable conductors. Performing splicing operations in connection with the installation, rearrangement, and repair of outside plant facilities. This includes fiber/copper cable, wire, terminals, loop carrier electronics and light guide facilities and various fiber optic applications which may be aloft, underground, or buried.
F. Installing, repairing, maintaining, and testing access lines for all types of service. Includes work associated with cable, splicing and all related support activities.
G. Determine air flow and pressure in cables – aerial and underground. Prepare cables for pressurization and maintaining cable pressure.
H. Drain water and remove any debris from manholes adhering to established guidelines and procedures. Use test equipment to check for gas in manholes.
I. Occasionally work with torches and lead sleeves and iron cases. Placing and removing protective covering over sheath openings.
J. Works aloft; handles and climbs ladders and poles; enters tunnels, buildings, trenches, controlled environment vaults (CEVs), crawl spaces, manholes, and other confined spaces to accomplish job tasks.
K. Works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
L. Perform construction work such as digging holes, placing poles, laying cable in the ground, unreeling, pulling and stringing wire and cable from pole to pole. Place fiber cable from Central Office through conduit or attach pole lines to customer business or distribution points in the loop.
M. Operating and maintaining vehicles, tools, and equipment needed to perform work operations in a safe manner.
N. Evaluating, identifying and meeting individual customer requirements on provisioning and/or repair requests. May be required to bill customers for services provided.
O. Adheres to Federal, State and local laws regarding work area protection and permits. Wears appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety practices and procedures.
P. Performs temporary rearrangements on Central Office Frame.
Q. Normally works and travels alone between work locations, by driving a Company vehicle, with little or no direct supervision. May be assigned to work out of town for various lengths of time. May be required to stand or sit for long periods of time.
R. Communicate effectively and professionally with customers, and ensure regular progress updates are provided.
S. Write legibly and perform basic math calculations accurately.
T. Meeting annual performance objectives.
U. May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.
Qualifications
A. Tests– Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.
B. Must meet safety-related requirements including but not limited to those standards of safety imposed by OSHA, state agencies, manufacturers and/or the Company.
C. Medical evaluation is required. Must be able to perform physical requirements of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation, including, but not limited to, perceiving differences in wire cable colors, distinguishing audio tones, moving and/or lifting items such as ladders, tools, air tanks, cable reels, test equipment and other objects weighing up to 100 pounds, working aloft; climbing ladders and poles, and entering tunnels, buildings, trenches, crawl spaces, manholes, and other confined spaces to accomplish job tasks.
D. Security background investigation may be required.
E. A valid state driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Where a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, the candidate must possess and maintain a valid/current CDL as required by the work state. If the candidate does not have a valid CDL at the time of hire, he/she will receive related, Company-provided Department of Transportation (DOT) training. The candidate must pass a drug and alcohol test and qualify on the DOT CDL physical, written, and skills qualifications tests to retain the job.
F. Must meet applicable federal and state standards for operating the size vehicles covered by this job title.
G. Must be available to work scheduled tours designated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the needs of the business. Associates may be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, non-scheduled and non-consecutive days, as the needs of the business require. Tours are subject to change at any time based on the needs of the business and that are in accord with labor contract requirements.
