RANGE SUPPORT CRAFT – DECKHAND
VETS is actively seeking a RSC Deckhand to support the Navy Integrated Training Environment (NITE) Contract located at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, CA. The Deckhand will assist the RSC Able Seaman to perform tasks required to meet the RSC mission to support the SCTTR training schedule.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- General line handling, spicing/knot tying, responsible for mooring and unmooring vessels to and from piers, docks and buoys
- Operation of deck winches, cranes and anchor winches
- Performs specialized marine and shore-based tasks in support of SCTTR and Fleet training
- Launch/recovery/operation of small boat
- Stand watch while vessel underway for periods of 12 consecutive hours
- Loads cargo as part of deck department team under supervision of Mate/AB
- Maintenance to vessel in accordance with Preventative Maintenance Program
- Maintain cleanliness of vessel and accompanying equipment
- Prepares meals in accordance with crew meal schedule
- Works in team environment under immediate supervision of Mate/AB receiving technical guidance as required
- Maintenance of SCORE Network/NMCI access by regularly accessing computer network system
Qualification Requirements:
- Must have the ability to acquire and hold a Secret Security Clearance
- United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential – Minimum rating of OS
- Valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC – minimum six (6) months prior to renewal)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Basic Safety Training STCW 95, CPR/First Aid
- Must be able to complete company operational specific training with 120 days of hire
- Must be proficient in written and verbal English Language skills.
- Must be able to swim, pass annual company physical and able to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds
- Must be physically fit, and capable of spending extensive hours/days at sea in all weather conditions including performing their emergency duties listed in the vessel Station Bill
Desired:
- Knowledge of military operations is highly desirable.
Education:
- High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years vessel experience at sea.
- Graduation from an accredited trade school, or applicable military service or proven performance gained through experience in operation a vessel at sea.
Sea Service Requirements:
- Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, and Steward’s Department (FH)
- There are no sea service requirements for entry level endorsements.
Position Description:
Under designated supervision, The Deck Hand performs a variety of deck duties aboard ship and boats to include handling lines and cables tying knot, operating deck winches, and scraping, painting and cleaning designated to the ship/boat. The incumbent performs the following in this capacity:
a. Handles lines and cables when anchoring or getting under way, ties various types of knots, splices lines to secure cargo, boat and deck equipment.
b. Assists in hoisting and lowering boats, making up cargo nets and fenders, and in performing other marlinespike seamanship.
c. Operates deck winches to hoist or lower cargo and boats, works with ground tackle, block and tackle gear, and rigging equipment.
d. Scrapes, paints, and clean ships/boats, hull superstructure and compartment space.
e. May give instructions to passengers on the use of lifesaving equipment and instructions on what is required in case of emergency.
f. May receive and transmit radio message from boat to shore.
g. Performs other related duties as assigned.
