ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB’s Southeast Environmental Services team has an immediate need for an Entry Level Environmental Scientist to join our growing practice in Tampa or Sarasota, Florida. The successful candidate will get to work on a variety of projects across energy, transportation, real estate, and/or local government markets.
Responsibilities
- Wetland delineations
- Threatened and endangered species surveys
- Plant identification and vegetation inventories
- Water quality and discharge monitoring
- GPS, mobile technology, and data management
- GIS, geodatabases, and basic mapmaking
- Data entry, research, and analysis
- Writing and technical reporting
- Coordination with clients and regulatory agencies
- Environmental resource permit support
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to identify flora within Florida, using online resources and/or other technical keys/regional references.
- Technical writing and statistical analysis
- Mapping and data assessment using GIS
- Ability to travel on short notice, at night, and/or on weekend shifts, and potentially for extended periods of time
- Ability to think critically in the field and office
- Excellent attention to detail, team oriented, and flexible
- Ability to work independently or in a team.
- Ability to endure harsh outdoor environments in uncomfortable/extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.
- Comfort encountering wildlife while performing fieldwork.
- Ability to snorkel or acquire/have SCUBA certification, preferred.
- Ability to operate or learn to operate vehicles/vessels to access sites (e.g. ATV, small boats, kayaks, and four-wheel drive vehicles).
- Ability to perform field inspections including climb ladders and stairs, walk on slopes, lift and carry 40 pounds over a distance of up to 100 yards.
Minimum Qualifications
- 0-1 year of fieldwork experience in natural habitats, whether through coursework, internships or professional experience
- BS in a natural science-related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Biology, Zoology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Natural Resources)
- Internship experience preferred.
Hiring Salary Range - $53,000 - $58,000. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience.
