JOB TITLE: Lead Lifeguard

JOB SUMMARY:
Performs specialized work safeguarding the well-being of the public at the aquatics facilities for the Village of Wellington (Village). Position is responsible for monitoring aquatic facility patrons, acting in a lead capacity by mentoring lower-level lifeguard staff, and rendering lifesaving procedures, if needed.
Work is performed under limited supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains visual surveillance of aquatics facility patrons, fellow staff members, and Village employees based on set standards.
  • Performs as lead for lifeguard staff engaged in aquatics programming, safety and facility maintenance.
  • Ensures adherence to aquatics facilities established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines for both the public and staff.
  • Performs emergency water rescue duties to assist individuals in distress; applies rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR/PR) techniques where necessary; administers first aid.
  • Conducts or assists in-service water safety and lifeguard training certification programs for aquatics staff in water rescue and accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, first aid and CPR; conducts practice drills simulating emergency situations.
  • Conducts or assists with conducting periodic facility inspections; observes deficiencies in operations, maintenance, safety practices, and conditions; recommends deficiency corrections through verbal and written reports when necessary.
  • Inventories lifesaving, first aid supplies, and other equipment and notifies appropriate supervisor for replacement.
  • Maintains records of lifeguard attendance and schedules; coordinates lifeguard rotation shifts and drill work; maintains records regarding all first aid rendered and rescues effected.
  • Explains and interprets public safety rules and regulations, fees and charges, and aquatic operational procedures and programs to pool patrons; delivers a high degree of customer service to all patrons and user groups; enforces or refers enforcement to appropriate authorities.
  • Serves as supervisor on duty in absence of aquatic supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED required; an associate degree may be required in some areas; supplemented three (3) years of directly-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a Village owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines (if age-appropriate).
  • Valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate or recognized equivalent; valid American Red Cross or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or recognized equivalent; valid American Red Cross First Aid certification or recognized equivalent; valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or recognized equivalent. Regular attendance at work on-site is essential to maintain the necessary teamwork, personal interaction, and supervision that this position requires. Responds to emergency call-ins for hurricanes or other critical events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of technical procedures and systems such as emergency water rescue duties including rescue breathing and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/PR) techniques
  • Knowledge of accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, first aid, and practice drills simulating emergency situations
  • Skill in basic math including but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, practical algebra and metrics
  • Ability to maintain composure under stress
  • Ability to use reasoning skills that minimize duplication of efforts, including but not limited to comparing, classifying, analyzing and coordinating
  • Ability to multi-task while working with tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects when performing lifeguard tasks.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as sun, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability. Must have manual dexterity and be able to perform repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, or fingers. Must be able to perceive color and depth. Tasks involve prolonged eye use and/or fine visual ability; computer work, reading text, visual inspections, or measurement devices. Must be able to follow visual cues or signals.
