What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dance Musician (Non-benefited) position at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)?
The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) is seeking applicants for Musicians (piano and percussion accompaniment) for the Dept. of Dance Choreography. In this role, musicians will provide support for both major and non-major modern and ballet dance classes.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Work with Dance Choreography Instructors to select appropriate musical accompaniment, and provide adaptations to align with specific exercises and / or techniques
- Accompany modern dance and/or ballet classes with appropriate musical and stylistic considerations
- Salary Range: $21-$23/hr
- Anticipated Weekly Hours: 6-12
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Music or equivalent experience
- One (1) year of experience playing for dance classes at the collegiate, professional, or pre-professional level; or equivalent in related training, education, and/or experience.
- Knowledge of/ability to learn ballet terminology
- Ability to sight-read provided music and improvise in various styles as needed
- Prepare multiple genres of music (e.g. classical, pop, musical theatre, opera, or others) which can be adapted for the ballet and/or modern dance class
- Ability to maintain positive collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff in a diverse and inclusive working environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three (3) years of experience playing for dance classes at the collegiate, professional or pre-professional level;
