VCU LEDstudio is a leader in providing quality higher education using a number of delivery methods, including fully online and hybrid. The unit broadly supports faculty and academic units in their efforts to leverage technology to optimize student learning, and provides strategic leadership in developing, expanding and enhancing VCU’s online learning programs and energizing the assessment and continuous quality improvement of current and new technology-mediated courses and programs.
The position is a Graphic Design Learning Specialist (Communications Specialist CM) is part of the VCU LEDstudio media team that serves the needs of faculty teaching online and hybrid courses with the goal of student success. As part of that team, the graphic design learning specialist creates engaging visuals that convey, display, and communicate course content and enhance the online learning experience. The graphic design learning specialist must be comfortable creating backgrounds, transitions, lower thirds, thumbnails, text components, and other media assets/graphic elements for video and visual needs using Adobe Creative Cloud.
The faculty being served are from departments across disciplines. In collaboration with instructional designers, the media team creates the media needed as part of the overall course design. The media needed may be in the form of educational videos or may be graphic assets as part of interactive elements. The graphic design learning specialist works on translating abstract ideas and complex concepts into graphics.
This role is collaborative in nature and requires a level of comfort working with subject matter experts from a variety of disciplines, instructional designers with clear pedagogical directives, and media specialist colleagues.
The graphic design learning specialist must have the artistic sensibilities to create for a college student audience, while also meeting departmental needs for VCU and VCU Continuing and Professional Education and LEDstudio branded materials. Graphic design assignments are often needed for improving presentations and creating templates in Google Slides. Graphic design assignments may be for website or social media channel needs, for public-facing projects, ensuring compliance with web accessibility and design standards.
Other duties as assigned in response to the unit’s needs.
This position requires on-campus and off-campus presence based on business needs. There is the opportunity for telework at the supervisor’s discretion. The telework nature of this position is subject to change based on the university's needs and strategic direction.
