As a vital part of the VCCS, the Shared Services Center is strategically located to support the needs of all 23 colleges. Our innovative approach allows us to make the most of every dollar spent, focusing on backroom process efficiency and economies of scale.
The Buyer Specialist plays a critical role in this effort, performing transactional purchases for a wide range of goods and services across the VCCS. Key responsibilities include:
- Receiving demand signals and procuring goods and services up to the small purchase threshold
- Ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant purchasing processes
- Employing best business practices to improve performance, compliance, efficiency, and effectiveness
Key Skills and Qualifications Include:
- Ability to execute simple to moderately complex purchases
- Proficient use of automated procurement systems
- Analysis and decision-making skills for quote and bid evaluation
- Procurement process management from need to purchase order
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills
- Sound judgment, problem-solving, and attention to detail
Minimum Requirements:
- Multiple years of customer service or team-oriented work experience
- Minimal buying experience with purchasing, vendor management, inventory management, negotiations, market research, or project coordination
- Current Virginia Contracting Associate (VCA) certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire
Additional Considerations:
- Procurement experience in higher education and/or state government
- Knowledge of governmental procurement principles and policies
- Professional procurement certification(s)
