Position Title: Custodian
Department: Facilities Management
Location: Virginia Union University (VUU), Richmond, VA
Reports To: Custodian Manager
Position Overview: The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the educational facilities at Virginia Union University (VUU). This role ensures a clean, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- General Cleaning: Perform general cleaning and janitorial duties in the common areas of the building.
- Minor Repairs: Conduct minor repairs and maintenance such as replacing light fixtures or unclogging pipes.
- Restroom and Cafeteria Maintenance: Assist in cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and cafeteria areas.
- Grounds Maintenance: Perform limited grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming lawns and hedges, and cleaning snow from sidewalks.
- System Operations: Ensure heating and cooling systems are operational.
- Stock Management: Maintain a neat and orderly janitor’s room; ensure cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
- Window Cleaning: Wash windows to maintain a clear and clean appearance.
- Safety Inspections: Assist in examining the school for safety hazards; report deficiencies to the lead custodian, principal, and/or school resource officer.
- Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Safety Knowledge: Understanding of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
- Attention to Detail: Detail-oriented and thorough in cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Repair Skills: Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
- Professional Interaction: Ability to interact professionally, politely, and courteously with staff, students, parents, and visitors.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to keep the school clean and orderly.
Education and Experience:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Background Check: Must pass a background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing: Prolonged periods of standing.
- Physical Activity: Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
