POSITION DESCRIPTION
VIVID PATHOLOGY, P.A.
Position Title: Histology Supervisor
Position Summary: This position manages the day-to-day operations of the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory in Birmingham.
Position Relations: This position reports directly to the COO
Workers Supervised: This position supervises all Histology Laboratory Aides, Histotechnicians, Histotechnologists and other Laboratory Aides.
Interrelationships/Contacts: Routine contact with other supervisors within the company, pathologists, and other company employees. Frequent contact with Grossing Supervisor, Board of Directors, referring physicians and personnel from other Hospital Laboratories. Occasional contact with visitors and patients of Hospitals. Routine contact with vendors.
Essential Function and Job Responsibilities:
- Employee scheduling and PTO approval of all staff at multiple locations to ensure adequate coverage
- Cover staffing shortages in all areas
- Approval of timecards for all employees, along with manual time and org unit adjustments as necessary
- Direct daily supervision of the activities of employees in all areas
- Technical troubleshooting of LIS, equipment, embedding, routine/special/lHC/ISH staining issues
- Function as liaison between the pathologists and department staff members
- Monitor and provide technical feedback for Lab Aides and histologists
- Perform annual evaluations for all staff members in accordance with company policy
- Serve as an educational clinical mentor for students going through HT or HTL certification
- Mediate and resolve deficient behavior and technical problems of all staff members. Take disciplinary action, when required.
- Evaluate the competency of technicians and technologists. Identify weaknesses in performance and take necessary corrective action.
- Administer Quality Control issues, including incident resolution, technical problems and ensuring proper documentation of all Quality Control activities.
- Promote efficient workflow, fast turnaround times and improvements in overall quality of work throughout the Histology Department and do so in conjunction with the Grossing Supervisor and Grossing Department.
- Monitor compliance with all procedural, safety and personnel policies established by the company and other regulatory agencies.
- Maintain and update (as needed) all policy and procedure manuals for the department, including facility specific manuals
- Ensure that personnel requiring licensing by the State of Florida meet necessary requirements and that copies of current licenses are on file.
- Ensure that all laboratory equipment is properly functioning and all preventative maintenance is performed as required.
- Ensure the proper handling and disposal of all chemicals and hazardous materials within the department according to company and other regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the planning, preparation, and monitoring of the annual operating budget for the Histology Department and do so in conjunction with the Grossing Supervisor and Grossing Department.
- Evaluating options for large equipment purchases. Coordinating receipt, installation, validation, staff training, procedure creations for said equipment.
- Supply management including use, ordering, and receiving of supplies.
Manage cost effectiveness.
- Assist in establishing protocols for the performance of all tests
- Assist in establishing protocols for specimen grossing, including novel protocols to meet research and special project needs as required
- Attend management meetings as necessary
- Adhere to all corporate policies and procedures, corporate compliance policies and governmental regulations such as HIPAA, CUA, OSHA, CAP, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Certification and Experience:
- Successful completion of an accredited Histology training program
- Licensed by the State of Florida at the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor level
- ASCP HTL certification is required
- Must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing
- Five years experience (at least 2 grossing) in an accredited facility is preferred
- Requires knowledge in general Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and
Chemistry with an understanding of the scientific method.

Hours of Work:
Hours of work are dictated by the requirements of the position. Normal hours for this salaried position are 40 to 50 hours per week. Some additional hours may be required from time to time in order to meet established specimen turnaround times.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
