Position Summary:
The Department of Education (DOE) is seeking a skilled Database Developer to support our data warehousing and business intelligence initiatives. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into robust data solutions, including data analysis, data integration, and the development of high-performance data pipelines and database structures. The role will focus on enhancing data quality, optimizing performance, and enabling data-driven decision-making across the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business use cases and translate them into data integration routines involving extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) across multiple systems.
- Identify and document data sources, data flows, and develop comprehensive source-to-target mappings.
- Partner with Data Architects to recommend optimal data models for ingestion and support BI Developers in designing analytic reports.
- Design, implement, and maintain database structures (tables, views, indexes, etc.), ensuring security and performance optimization.
- Guide team members in developing database applications both on-premises and in cloud environments.
- Work closely with data stewards, owners, and domain experts to ensure best practices in data integrity, validation, and documentation.
- Optimize data warehouse performance through advanced tuning and parallel processing techniques.
- Support governance processes to ensure accuracy and consistency of educational metadata in BI systems.
- Monitor and ensure data quality using audit controls and proactive cleansing techniques.
- Perform regular integrity checks, manage deployments, and coordinate releases.
- Use version control tools like GitHub and CI/CD pipelines for code management and deployments.
- Provide on-call support for critical after-hours issues when required.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server, with expert-level proficiency in T-SQL.
- Minimum 5 years of experience with SSIS and development of complex Stored Procedures.
- 2 years of experience using Power BI for creating dashboards and reports.
- Proven ability to ingest and aggregate data from diverse internal and external sources into a centralized warehouse.
- Strong understanding of data modeling including conceptual, logical, and physical designs.
- Deep expertise in relational database concepts and SQL programming.
- Experience mentoring junior developers or team members.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of experience with Azure Synapse Analytics (Data Warehouse).
- Familiarity with Azure Data Factory, SQL VMs, and Data Lake environments for ETL processes.
- Experience building cloud-based solutions and supporting hybrid architecture models.
