TITLE: Summer Camp Counselor

DEPARTMENT: Summer Camp

REPORTS TO: Camp Director/Program Director

EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal

PAY: $15-18/hour, based on experience

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club seeks energetic and responsible individuals who have a passion for working with children to join our Summer Day Camp team. Summer Camp Counselors responsible for daily supervision of their camp group including leading a wide variety of activities, managing camper interests and needs while working with other camp staff to provide an exciting and dynamic camp experience for campers.

Summer Day Camp hours for staff are at Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse from 8:00am-4:00pm or 9:30am-5:30pm.

Staff must wear proper uniform, including Wakeman Staff shirt, sneakers, walkie, and name tag.

Summer Camp Counselor must be available to work all 35 days of camp.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

  • This position requires remaining on site while camp is in session, including lunch periods while they supervise the children.
  • Assist with development, plan, and facilitate program specific activities.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and act as role models to club members.
  • Monitor programs, services, and activities to ensure the safety of all members.
  • Need flexibility when changes need to be made and dealing with a variety of situations.
  • Help maintain cleanliness and order of classrooms and the building.
  • Attend staff meetings and follow procedures.
  • Develop relationships with members to ensure trust and confidence in them, to recruit them to participate in programs and increase membership participation.
  • Report immediately to supervisor any evidence of child abuse including physical, mental, emotional and/or neglect.
  • Provide friendly, courteous assistance, exceeding customers’ expectations every day, which includes building and maintaining healthy professional relationships with parents, children, and staff.
  • Will be required to carry out emergency procedures, building rules and regulations.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts, wearing appropriate uniform and nametag, and prepare for all assignments.
  • Keep accurate, detailed records of incident reports and other necessary documentation.
  • Participate in training and other professional development activities to enhance knowledge and understanding of racial justice and woman’s empowerment.
  • Align programs and services both implicitly with mission of eliminating racism and empowering women; Provides a safe environment and program for all participants.

ADDITIONAL REPSONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure a team-based work environment by communicating effectively and positively with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers and other community partners.
  • Make recommendations regarding member’s needs, program ideas, and facility needs.
  • May be asked to participate in special programs and or events. These events may be scheduled at times when the Club is not open.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Directors.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Boys & Girls Club or youth organization experience preferred.
  • Experience working with youth grades K-8.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior.
  • Knowledge of youth development strategies.
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
  • Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
  • Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • This position requires standing for long periods of time.
  • This position may require lifting items up to 50lbs.
