What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Installation Support Technician position at Walker Art Center?
The Temporary Support Technician is a project-based hire, acting as support crew for the Lead Preparator during specific exhibitions and commissions. Primary responsibilities include art handling & installation, fabrication, gallery preparation, demolition, painting & finishing. The Support Technician is given assignments by the Lead Preparator, and works with the Exhibition Installation, Registration and Visual Art departments to achieve daily objectives.
Essential Experience & Responsibilities (include but may not be limited to):
Responsibilities:
- Art Handling & Installation
- Gallery Preparation (ex: Wall Repair, Sanding, Painting)
- Exhibition Fabrication (ex: Pedestals, Risers, Mounts)
- Exhibition Framing *preferred but not required
- Exhibition Crating (ex: Construction, Demolition, Packing, and Unpacking)
- Loading and unloading of trucks
Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge and skilled use of hand tools, power tools, moving equipment and mechanical lifts
- Ability to lift 50lbs unassisted
- Basic carpentry and fabrication skills
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow written instructions, drawings, and floorplans
- Basic computer skills

QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1 year or more of museum/gallery experience, exemplifying professional practices in art handling & installation.
- Fabrication experience, knowledge of materials, techniques, and construction processes.
- Possess comfort and demonstrate competence while working at heights
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION
- $18-25 hourly, dependent on experience.
- Full-time, Temporary (35 hours/week), Non-exempt
