Position Summary

The Schwartz lab is opening September 2022. We study the role of the gut microbiome and immune response in serious bacterial infections of children. The lab uses a combination of microbiology techniques, next-generation sequencing, immune profiling, and computational analyses of human stool and mouse models to understand the host-microbiome interface in leading to serious bacterial infections.

We are seeking someone to assist with research studies, experiments, preparation of material, and documentation. Assists with ordering equipment, reagents, and ensuring smooth function of the lab.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts research experiments and assays including microbiology techniques such as bacterial culturing in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, cell culture, molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA extraction, next generation sequencing library creation, cloning, RT-PCR, and Western blots.
  • Evaluates research results, reporting findings and discussing project outcomes with staff involved.
  • Performs data entry and maintains data files on research. These include animal experiments and archival and inventory of clinical research samples.
  • Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Coordinates research project with other institutions and investigators.
  • Participates in developing hypotheses to be tested and ways of testing it.
  • Assists with general supply/equipment orders, lab maintenance and cleaning.
  • Performs literature research on specified topics.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals

Preferred Qualifications

  • Desire to learn or prior experience with research animals.
  • Experience with microbiology, genomic and/or metagenomic techniques, DNA library creation, or next-generation sequencing techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement general laboratory procedures, conduct research, and record findings, with focus on pursuit of advanced education in field.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with two to three years of experience in laboratory operations.

Salary Range

$15.77 - $26.83 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
