What are the responsibilities and job description for the MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR SUPERVISOR position at Washoe County?
Under direction, supervises and manages professional clinical workers in the areas of child protective services, adult services, mobile crisis response team, senior services or juvenile services; and performs related work as required.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in the Human Services Agency on the Mobile Crisis Response Team. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies throughout the County as they occur.

A master’s degree from accredited college or university in social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling, psychology or closely related field AND licensure in the State of Nevada to practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Clinical Professional Counselor AND three years of full-time experience performing clinical case work.
License Or Certificate
- License to practice in area of assignment at time of application. (Licensure must be as a practitioner, not as an intern.)
- Possession of valid driver’s license required at time of appointment.
The Ideal Candidate
Human Services Agency- Mobile Crisis Response Team (current vacancy)
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to children and families during times of crisis and instability. The individual will lead a team of licensed Mental Health Counselor staff, clinical interns, and Case Workers who are providing community crisis response and stabilization services. The individual selected for this position will have experience creating and delivering training, guidance and supervision. This position will be responsible to take part in and lead agency teams and initiatives including program implementation, data collection, and reporting on a Local, State, and Federal level. The ideal candidate will have experience with community resources, barriers to resources, and knowledge on how to access resources. As a part of the administrative team, the ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of billing and reimbursement structures for crisis and mental health services. This individual will provide oversight, guidance, supervision and possibly provide direct services. An ideal candidate will be bilingual, be a Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor intern or Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor or Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor.
Human Services Agency - CPS Division
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to children and families and will lead a team of licensed Mental Health Counselor staff and clinical interns, offering training, guidance, and supervision, as well as direct client services. This position will be responsible to take part in and lead agency teams and initiatives including program implementation, data collection, and reporting on a Local, State, and Federal level. The selected candidate will provide oversight and guidance to the Mental Health Counselors, clinical interns and caseworkers making up our clinical services team for Child Protective Services. An ideal candidate will be bilingual in Spanish, be a Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor or Certified Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Intern or Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor or Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor.
Human Services Agency – Housing and Homeless Services Division
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to vulnerable adult populations, including those experiencing homelessness. The individual selected for this position will function as a team lead, providing training, guidance, and supervision to County employed staff. The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor will be responsible for providing direct client services as needed and will have knowledge of best practices in working with individuals experiencing homelessness and an understanding of crisis intervention strategies. They will also have an awareness of current community resources and how to assist participants with navigating complex care systems. As a part of the administrative team, the ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement structures for mental health services, plus an understanding of local, State, and Federal laws that impact service provision to this population. Additionally, this individual will assist with the development of policies and procedures for their team as well as assist with quality assurance projects and data collection and reporting.
Juvenile Services Department
The ideal candidate will have experience providing therapy and casework to at-risk adolescents and their families; will have knowledge of mental health and of other community resources and on how to best navigate them. The selected candidate will provide oversight to the Mental Health Services Unit within the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center, which include the detention center and probation services, and they will also provide supervision and training to Juvenile Services’ staff. The ideal candidate must have mental health supervisory experience.
Human Services Agency (Current position)
The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Human Services Agency is covered by the Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) - Supervisory. Certain positions in the Human Services Agency have access to criminal justice agency systems including NCIC and CJIS. All felony convictions, gross misdemeanor and certain misdemeanors will prohibit that employee from working with NCIC and CJIS criminal justice systems. Additionally, Human Services Agency will run a background check via the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry.
Juvenile Services
The Mental Health Counselor Supervisor position located at the Juvenile Services Department is not covered by a bargaining unit. After the interview process, top candidates will go through a background investigation process that includes:
- Complete and submit a Personal History Statement and pass an extensive background investigation.
- Submit a set of fingerprints.
Additional Conditions (All Departments):
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective July 1, 2019, the $40.25 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
(Human Services Only) Human Services Agency employees will be required to have a tuberculosis test. The cost of the test will be borne by the selected applicant(s).
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.
