WATERMAN'S SUMMER YOUTH CAMPS

An important aspect of Waterman's Community Center's summer programming are its creative and
fun summer camps for children on North Haven. There are three age levels and each engages
children around the special aspects of an island summer in a unique, age-appropriate way. Camp
staff need to be imaginative, responsible, and resourceful.


Positions Available in Waterman's 2023 Camps

Summer Urchins Camp : ages 1-3 years

Summer Urchins Assistant Leader
Summer Urchins Interns

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-12PM from mid-June to the end of August.

Additional Information: The Summer Urchins staff is responsible to see that the 2023 Summer
Urchins camp is safe, fun, and successful for all involved. Camp themes, such as Creative Kitchen,
Music Makers, Pirate Week, and Fins & Feathers, change weekly and encourage learning, sensory
development, social skills, and self-discovery. Applicant should have experience and feel
comfortable working with this young age group.


School of Fish Camp: ages 3-5 years

School of Fish Interns

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-12PM from mid-June to the end of August.

Additional Information: The School of Fish staff is responsible to see that the 2023 School of Fish
camp is safe, fun, and successful for all involved. Camp themes, such as Creative Kitchen, Music
Makers, Pirate Week, and Fins & Feathers, change weekly and encourage learning, sensory
development, social skills, and self-discovery. Time is spent in the classroom playing and working
on projects and also outside experiencing nature (beaches, hikes, etc.) near the North Haven village
area.

Arts & Adventure Camp : ages 6-9 years
P ositions Open:

Arts & Adventure Leader
Arts & Adventure Assistant Leader
Arts & Adventure Interns

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8AM-12PM from mid-June to the end of August.

Additional Information: Arts & Adventure Camp is an art and nature focused summer day camp
offered to children on North Haven ages 6-9 years old. The camp encourages curiosity for the arts
and sciences. Campers learn about the island through nature inspired art projects and outdoor
excursions to ponds, beaches, farms, and forest trails. Weekly themes focus on visual and
performing arts and Maine island nature. The daily schedule consists of an ongoing craft, art
journaling, snack, and an outdoor excursion related to the weekly theme.

Aftercare Camp : ages 18 months - 5 years
Positions Open:

AfterCare Leader
AfterCare Assistant Leader
AfterCare Intern

Schedule: Monday-Friday 12PM-4PM from mid-June to the end of August.

Additional Information: AfterCare is an afternoon program offered to year-round North Haven
families needing all day childcare. The campers eat lunch they have bought from home then settle
down for a rest or nap time. After resting, the campers have a snack and free or organized play
time (inside or out, weather dependent). This position can be combined with any of the morning
camps for an employee desiring additional work hours.

EXPECTATIONS OF ALL WATERMAN'S CAMP STAFF

Plan a summer full of fun, adventure, and creativity.
Plan and implement fun and developmentally appropriate activities that encourage self-esteem
and social skills and learning about our island environment through nature exploration and art
projects.
Create a warm, friendly, and nurturing environment.
Be vigilant that the children are safe at all times.
Interact with the children to support plan, exploration, and learning.
Work alternately with individual children, small groups, and the entire class.
Encourage independence in the students but be prepared to help as needed.
Arrive every day with a positive attitude and prepared for the day's activities.
Oversee and work cooperatively with the assistants and interns and communicate with Youth
Activities Director daily.
Work cooperatively with other Waterman's staff and volunteers.

Love of working with Children
Knowledge of and experience working with children in the outdoors.
Knowledge of and experience working with children on simple art projects
High energy and enthusiasm for seeing that Waterman's thrives
Creative with the ability to "think outside the box".
Commitment that the program is safely implemented and of the highest quality possible.
Ability to work with a team in a collaborative environment.
Exemplary time-management and organizational skills.
Sensibly detail oriented, efficient and versatile.
First Aid/CPR Certification required for leaders and assistants but not interns (training may be
available on island)

Pay: $16.00-20.00/hr. depending on experience and job performance. Paid bi-weekly. 10-week
commitment strongly encouraged.
