WAUSHARA COUNTY POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Driver - Transport
DEPARTMENT: Department of Aging Services
FUNCTION:
Responsible for providing door-to-door transportation service for residents of Waushara County, primarily older adults, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Drivers may work a regular schedule or on an as needed, fill-in basis.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs duties in a manner that emphasizes high quality customer service and with an empathetic attitude for elders and individuals with disabilities.
2. Reports to transportation management at the beginning and end of each shift to review and provide input into the daily trip schedule, emphasizing trip coordination and program efficiency.
3. Assures that riders are picked up as scheduled and return trips are completed within 30 minutes of being notified.
4. Provides assistance to passengers getting into and out of vehicles and will assist with carrying shopping bags and small packages as needed.
5. Operates safely the wheelchair lift, monitoring passengers for a safe and secure experience.
6. Assures passengers are using seat belts appropriately, and that all wheelchairs or mobility vehicles, aids and child restraints are secured properly.
7. Follows all traffic laws and county policy while driving.
8. Maintains a daily record of trips provided, including trip type, mileage driven, and other related items.
9. Assures that all money received from passengers is recorded and receipted daily.
10. Will report any passenger or vehicle incident immediately to program management, and according to department policy.
11. Will follow department procedures for responding to emergency situations, including contacting management and/or emergency medical assistance when necessary, and waiting for help to arrive.
12. Maintains a clean and sanitary vehicle, and performs vehicle inspection as required by department policy, reporting identified problems to management. Assures vehicles have sufficient gas, and preventative and general maintenance tasks are completed in a timely manner.
13. Will follow department No Gift Policy, thereby refusing to accept gifts or tips from participants of the program. Gifts or tips should be returned or donated to the program.
14. Will report any personal vehicle ticketed violations to Supervisor within 3 business days.
15. Will inform Supervisor of any health issues that may interfere with driving responsibilities.
16. Drivers may not carry weapons while on duty and are responsible for prohibiting passengers from bringing weapons onto the vehicles when made aware that passengers are carrying weapons, regardless of open or concealed carry laws.
17. Attends all assigned meetings and trainings.
18. Participates in county-wide emergency response efforts due to a natural disaster, pandemic, or other related events and as directed by program management.
19. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
20. Promote, get along, and work in harmonious relationship with others including but not limited to outside agencies and county departments.
21. Perform other related job duties as assigned.
WORKING ELEMENTS:
Education, Training and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
- Must meet requirements of Chauffer driving.
- Training in defensive driving, wheelchair/mobility device securement, proper restraint of a child, passenger assistance and sensitivity – or ability to successfully complete training within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to be empathetic to and patient with older adults or individuals with disabilities, and to deal with disgruntled passengers.
- Skilled at driving a medium size bus in heavy traffic areas, tight quarters, and during inclement weather.
- Ability to read and understand maps or directions, and traffic signs.
- Knowledgeable about proper securement procedures for various types of riders.
- Able to problem solve, perform duties, and follow policy and procedures independent of direct supervision.
- Ability to count and perform basic math.
- Ability to use efficiently a department assigned cell phone.
- Ability to understand and follow program policies and procedures.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of program participants.
- Must have a current and valid Wisconsin driver’s license and meet all requirements of chauffer driving.
Responsibility and Authority
- Works under direct Supervision of the Transportation Specialist with program oversight provided by the Department of Aging Director.
Working Conditions
- Standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting required. Will frequently transition from a seated to standing position.
As a part-time Waushara County employee, drivers may be eligible to cross-train and work additional hours filling in as a driver for the home delivered meals program on an on-call and as needed basis, or for other special events. Employees must have skill sets sufficient to meet any and all additional job duties (see related job description) and will be compensated the same rate of pay as received for duties as a transport driver.
