Underground Outside Plant (OSP) Technician

Job Summary:
The Underground OSP Technician at Wecom Fiber is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications and fiber optic infrastructure in underground environments. Expertise in underground fiber optic installations, cable management, and network connectivity will play a crucial role in expanding and maintaining telecommunications services in various locations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install underground telecommunications and fiber optic cables, conduits, and ducts in trenching, directional boring, and other underground methods to establish network connectivity and expand telecommunications services.
- Perform underground fiber optic cable splicing, termination, and testing activities to ensure proper signal transmission, connectivity, and performance in telecommunications and fiber networks.
- Inspect and maintain underground OSP infrastructure, including cables, conduits, vaults, and manholes, to identify potential issues, damage, or degradation and initiate corrective actions.
- Coordinate with engineering teams, project managers, and field technicians to plan and execute underground OSP projects, ensuring compliance with design specifications, safety regulations, and project timelines.
- Troubleshoot underground fiber optic network issues, conduct OSP surveys, and perform route assessments to optimize network design, cable placement, and underground fiber management.
- Document underground OSP installations, splicing activities, maintenance records, and network configurations to maintain accurate records, as-built documentation, and network diagrams for future reference.
- Adhere to safety protocols, PPE requirements, and industry best practices for working in underground environments, handling fiber optic equipment, and ensuring the safety of personnel during underground OSP operations.
- Utilize underground fiber optic installation tools, equipment, and hardware to lay, secure, and manage underground telecommunications and fiber optic cables in conduits and ducts.
- Perform fiber optic fusion splicing, connectorization, and fiber management techniques in underground OSP installations to ensure reliable connectivity and signal integrity.
- Conduct optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) testing, power measurements, and signal loss assessments to verify the performance and quality of underground fiber optic networks.
- Interpret underground OSP design plans, fiber optic schematics, and network layouts to implement accurate cable routing, splicing points, and underground fiber management strategies.
- Follow underground OSP engineering guidelines, telecommunications specifications, and industry standards for underground fiber optic installations, cable handling, and network design.
- Collaborate with telecommunications teams, contractors, and stakeholders to coordinate underground OSP activities, resolve technical issues, and ensure project objectives are met.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification in telecommunications, fiber optics, or related field is preferred.
- Proven experience as an Underground OSP Technician in the telecommunications and fiber industry, with expertise in underground fiber optic installations, splicing, and network maintenance.
- Ability to work in underground environments, handle fiber optic equipment, and perform underground OSP tasks with a focus on safety, efficiency, and quality.
- Proficiency in underground fiber optic installation tools, fusion splicers, OTDRs, and fiber management techniques to perform underground OSP activities effectively.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and technical aptitude to troubleshoot underground fiber optic network issues, optimize network performance, and ensure network reliability.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and adaptability to work in dynamic underground OSP environments, collaborate with project teams, and support telecommunications and fiber network expansions.
