What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Manager position at Weigand Construction Co., Inc.?
This position is responsible for assisting the Safety Director with the planning and preparation of job site set-up; inspecting and conducting job site visits; advising, supporting, and providing projects safety-oriented environments; scheduling safety training and administering the safety program.
The individual serves on various committee assignments and is invited to address various committees regarding safety issues.
This position reports to: Corporate Safety Director
Reporting to this position is: Project Superintendents, Managers, and Engineers
Internally, the hire works with the Safety Director, Director of Field Operations, Project Supervisors, and Project Managers.
Externally, the position interacts with subcontractors, vendors, government regulatory agencies, and others associated with project-related activities.
What are some things that I will do?
Job Site Set-Up
1.1 Preconstruction Checklist: Assesses project safety needs, designs pre-task plans to identify, real and potential, safety related issues, requirements, and considerations, including any pre-installation conferencing required or requested.
1.2 Posting: Identifies, determines and posts all OSHA required postings at appropriate locations, in compliance with regulatory agency.
1.3 First Aid: Sets up and updates first aid, bloodborne pathogen, project medical facility and corresponding information timely and properly, in compliance with regulations.
1.4 Safety Equipment: Provides, places, and updates safety equipment on location in a timely manner, in compliance with OSHA regulations and company guidelines.
Site Visits
2.1 Job Site Inspection: Regularly and adequately conducts job inspections to monitor job site safety conditions and work practices to facilitate compliance with Weigand Safety Policies, OSHA requirements, and any project specific safety rules and requirements.
2.2 Internal Interaction: Informs, clarifies, confers, and documents, with internal project personnel, proper safety requirements and any corrective actions required while building credibility and rapport.
2.3 External Interaction: Informs, clarifies, confers, and documents proper safety requirements and any corrective actions required by subcontractors and other external project related personnel while building credibility and rapport.
2.4 Job Site Investigation: Investigates job site conditions and accidents with OSHA inspectors, owner’s representatives, and/or project specific safety groups, and follows up on any safety directives and citations in a timely and proper manner.
2.5 Technical Problem Solving and Decision Making: Identifies critical dimensions of existing or anticipated problems, obtains relevant information, determines cause-effect relationships, specifies alternative solutions, and exhibits decision making, consistent with safety regulations and time constraints.
2.6 Flexibility: Modifies behavioral style and approach to reach a goal, and maintains effectiveness in different situations and changing work environments under diverse circumstances.
2.7 Safety equipment inspections: including ladders, fall protection, scaffolding etc.
Administration
3.1 Training: Plans, schedules, and facilitates the safety training program in a manner, which promotes a safety-oriented environment.
3.2 Filing: Manages filing process and updating of safety related files in a manner that allows quick access, retrieval, and use for evaluation, reporting, and control of desired safe outcome.
3.3 Correspondence: Communicates in writing with subcontractors/clients and internal/external project managers, timely and accurately, in a manner that supports corporate financial interests, legal position and client relations.
3.4 Time Management/Scheduling: Controls short and long-term events consisting of prioritized objectives, quantifiable action plans, deadlines and check dates.
3.5 Project Knowledge: Shows a high level of diligence in studying, interpreting, comprehending, and applying project safety and regulations in a manner, which carries out construction objectives.
3.6 Computer Updates: Updates company computer safety tabulation files on a regular basis.
3.7 Change Facilitation: Develops, recommends and approves with the assistance of the Safety Director and Safety Committee changes to the Accident Prevention and Safety Program.
3.8 Reporting: Prepares and distributes reports on the status of safety to the Safety Director on a regular basis.
3.9 Notification: Advises Safety Director of observed safety issues during job site audits.
Management
4.1 Team Building: Shows capacity and willingness to work harmoniously with corporate personnel, external associates/clients and build group commitment to set goals/objectives.
4.2 Self Evaluation: Assesses own performance level accurately, perceives and understands personal capabilities and impact on others, as well as establishes and follows up career path and required proficiency.
4.3 Training: Shows consistency of participation in professional development program in accordance with performance review objectives, and career path agenda.
4.4 Delegation: Delegates filing, typing, tracking and other administrative duties for non-critical safety issues to Operations Assistant or other appropriate support staff.
4.5 Communication: Effective in verbal fluency, expression and clarity in the presentation of ideas, facts, issues, conflicts or persuasion, as well as in active listening and fact finding the critical elements of a conversation in an individual or group situation.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
College Graduate – Safety Degree – Or 5 years industry experience
The minimum amount of education or formal training and experience that are required for this position.
Kind of Experience: College Internship with a construction company or previous safety-related employment in the construction industry.
Trained in Workman’s Compensation rules and regulations (Indiana, Michigan, Ohio), Know Federal OSHA, and state IOSHA, MIOSHA rules and regulations for the construction Industry 29 CFR 1926
